Chevy Chase Lake
Chevy Chase Lake was a trolley park in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, that operated from 1894 until about 1936. It was created by the The Chevy Chase Land Company, Chevy Chase Land Company, which sought to draw residents of Washington, D.C., to its nascent suburb of Chevy Chase, Maryland, Chevy Chase. Its eponymous lake was formed by the 1892 damming of Coquelin Run, a tributary of Rock Creek (Potomac River tributary), Rock Creek. The lake gave its name to the neighborhood that grew up near it in Chevy Chase (CDP), Maryland, unincorporated Chevy Chase. The lake itself provided water for the coal-fired steam turbines that powered the electric streetcars of the Rock Creek Railway, the trolley line built by the Chevy Chase Land Company to connect residents of its new suburb to Washington, D.C. Meyer Davis (musician)
Meyer Davis (9 January 1892 – 6 April 1976) was a society musician in the 1920s to 1960s who at the height of his career owned and operated over 80 bands with more than 1,000 musicians playing for him. Early life Davis was born in Ellicott City, Maryland, to Solomon David and Rose Benjamin. His parents were of Russian Jewish ancestry from what is today Lithuania and Latvia. Davis, who began taking violin lessons as a child, began his musical career while a law student. From 1917 to 1930, Davis became the manager of the Chevy Chase Lake resort providing dance orchestras that appeared regularly through the vacation season. Career In 1915, Davis founded his first band, which was eventually named the Meyer Davis Orchestra. Kensington, Maryland
Kensington is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,213 at the 2010 United States Census. Greater Kensington encompasses the entire 20895 ZIP code, with a population of 19,054. History The area around the Rock Creek basin where Kensington is located was primarily agricultural until 1873, when the B&O Railroad completed the Metropolitan Branch which traversed Montgomery County. The Chevy Chase Lake & Kensington Railway (later, the Kensington Railway Company) was a streetcar company that operated in southern Montgomery County, Maryland, from 1895 to 1935. It connected the town of Kensington to the northern terminus of the Rock Creek Railway (later, the Capital Traction Company) at Chevy Chase Lake. Coquelin Run
Coquelin Run is a tributary of Rock Creek in Montgomery County, Maryland. It rises in the Town of Chevy Chase, runs for about two miles while draining an area of 1,095 acres (1.71 square miles), and debouches in Rock Creek in unincorporated Chevy Chase. While the stream valley remains largely wooded, it has long been affected by nearby urban and suburban development, and its course has been followed for more than a century by railroads and rail trails. From the 1890s to the 1930s, the stream was dammed to power electric streetcars and to create Chevy Chase Lake, an artificial lake that was the centerpiece of a popular trolley park.
