Chatra District
Chatra district is district one of the twenty-four districts of Jharkhand state, India. The district was formed after separation from Hazaribagh district in 1991. Chatra is the administrative headquarters of this district. The district covers an area of 3718 km2. History Ancient period In ancient period, the area covered by the present district and adjoining areas were ruled by a number of states, which were collectively known as the ''Atavika'' (forest) states. These states accepted the suzerainty of the Maurya empire during Ashoka's reign ( BCE). Samudragupta, while marching through the present-day Chotanagpur region, directed the first attack against the kingdom of Dakshina Kosala in the Mahanadi valley. Medieval period During Muhammad bin Tughluq's reign, the territory which comprises the present district came in contact with the Delhi sultanate. Chhatra Manikya (died 1667) was the Maharaja of Tripura from 1661 to 1667. Life Born Nakshatra Roy, he was a younger son of Maharaja Kalyan Manikya. Chhatra Man Singh Gurung
General Chhatra Man Singh Gurung (born July 18, 1952) is a Nepali military officer and a former Chief of Army Staff of the Nepali Army. Gurung joined the then Royal Nepalese Army in 1971, and studied at the Indian Military Academy before receiving his commission. He later studied at the Command and General Staff College in the United States, and the National Defense University in China, as well as taking a degree from Tribhuvan University. During his career, he commanded an independent infantry company and battalion before two stints at brigade command. At divisional level, he commanded forces during counter-insurgency operations in western Nepal. Chatra Gorge
The Chatra Gorge is a canyon cut by the Kosi River across the Mahabharat Range in Nepal. Kosi river system The Kosi, or Sapt Kosi, drains eastern Nepal. It is known as Sapt Koshi because of the seven rivers which join together in east-central Nepal to form this river. The main rivers forming the Kosi system are – the Sun Kosi, the Indravati River, the Bhote Koshi, the Dudh Kosi, the Arun River, Barun River, and Tamur River. The combined river flows through the Chatra gorge in a southerly direction to emerge from the hills. The Sun Kosi contributes 44 per cent of the total water in the Sapta Koshi, the Arun 37 per cent and the Tamur 19 per cent. Of the rivers that form the Sapta Kosi, the three main tributaries, Sun Kosi, Arun and Tamur converge at Tribeni and enter Chatra Gorge.
