Charlette N'Guessan
Charlette Desirée N'Guessan is an Ivorian software engineer, tech entrepreneur and writer. She was the first woman to win the Africa Prize For Engineering Innovation for the image recognition system, BACE API. Life N'Guessan was born in about 1994. Charlotte's name is not unusual in her family as all of her five sisters have that name. She studied at the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology in Accra which is where the idea for the software was first developed. In 2018 she created her company BACE group. N'Guessan was living in Ghana when she became the first woman to win the annual Africa Award for Engineering Innovation awarded by the British Royal Academy of Engineering, in the 2020 competition to showcase engineering science. The Africa Prize For Engineering Innovation is an award for excellence in engineering in Sub-Saharan Africa. Eight months are set aside to help the contestants. The winner is awarded £25,000, with the second, third and fourth runners-up gaining £10,000 each. History The award was introduced in January 2014 by the Royal Academy of Engineering in the United Kingdom. Competitor engineers must be from Sub-Saharan Africa. In 2024 Esther Kimani was the winner of the prize and, because it was the award's tenth year, she was awarded £50,000. She was second winner from Kenya. Kimani had developed a method of identifying diseases in crops using image analysis.
