Casalis
In the Middle Ages, a ''casalis'' or ''casale'' (Medieval Latin and Italian language, Italian; Old French and Old Spanish ''casal''), plural ''casalia'' (''casali'', ''casales''), was "a cluster of houses in a rural setting". The word is not classical Latin, but derives from the Latin word '':wikt:casa#Latin, casa'', meaning "house". The term originated in western Europe and was also employed in the Crusader states. Depending on the situation, the terms ''feudum'', ''villa'' and ''Suburb, locum suburbanum'' could by synonyms. Roccacasale (locally ''La Rocca'') is a ''comune'' in the Province of L'Aquila in the Abruzzo region of Italy. Built on the slopes of the Monte della Rocca in the central Apennines, the village overlooks the Peligna Valley and the town of Sulmona. The village arose from a small settlement called Casali, which had few inhabitants prior to 925. As a result of the construction of the fortified '' rocca'', sited to control the entrance to the Valle del Sangro and the Cinquemiglia plain, from Saracen or Byzantine, the centre formed, with the passing of time, into a typical medieval walled village on the slopes directly under the castle. Casale Monferrato () is a town in the Piedmont region of Northwest Italy, northwestern Italy, in the province of Alessandria. It is situated about east of Turin on the right bank of the Po River, Po, where the river runs at the foot of the Montferrat hills. Beyond the river lies the vast plain of the Po valley.
