Camphor
Camphor () is a waxy, colorless solid with a strong aroma. It is classified as a terpenoid and a cyclic ketone. It is found in the wood of the camphor laurel ('' Cinnamomum camphora''), a large evergreen tree found in East Asia; and in the kapur tree ( ''Dryobalanops'' sp.), a tall timber tree from South East Asia. It also occurs in some other related trees in the laurel family, notably '' Ocotea usambarensis''. Rosemary leaves ('' Rosmarinus officinalis'') contain 0.05 to 0.5% camphor, while camphorweed ('' Heterotheca'') contains some 5%. A major source of camphor in Asia is camphor basil (the parent of African blue basil). Camphor can also be synthetically produced from oil of turpentine. The compound is chiral, existing in two possible enantiomers as shown in the structural diagrams. Camphor (album)
''Camphor'' is a David Sylvian compilation album released in 2002 as a companion to ''Everything and Nothing''. The focus is on his instrumental work. Background Both "Camphor" and "The Song Which Gives the Key to Perfection" were originally released on the bonus CD included with Everything and Nothing tour book. In "The Song Which Gives the Key to Perfection" Sylvian sings a chapter from a Hindu holy text. It is sung in the original Sanskrit from the book called ‘ Chandi Path’. "Wave" has been cut to the last segment of the original song which omits the vocal parts. New original sounds orchestrated by Simon Jeffes were added. "Mother and Child (remix)" has vocal replaced by trumpet and the music was sampled and remixed by Jan Bang and Erik Honoré. "Upon This Earth" is shorter. Alexander Priestly Camphor
Alexander Priestly Camphor (1865 – 1919), also known as A.P. Camphor, was an American Bishop, missionary, educator, academic administrator, author, and college president. He was the Missionary Bishop (Methodist Church), Missionary Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, elected in 1916. He served as president of Central Alabama College and the College of West Africa. Camphor Hall at Dillard University, New Orleans is named in his honor. Biography Alexander Camphor born on August 9, 1865, on a Louisiana sugar plantation in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, Jefferson Parish, and was the son of enslaved parents named Elizabeth and Perry Camphor. He was adopted as a child after the death of his parents by Stephen Priestly, a white Methodist preacher. He attended the Freedmen's Aid Society schools during the Reconstruction era. ''Camphora officinarum'' is a species of evergreen tree that is commonly known under the names camphor tree, camphorwood or camphor laurel. Description ''Camphora officinarum'' is native to China south of the Yangtze River, Taiwan, southern Japan, Korea, India and Vietnam, and has been introduced to many other countries. It grows up to tall. In Japan, where the tree is called ''kusunoki'', five camphor trees are known with a trunk circumference above , with the largest individual, , reaching 24.22 m.
