Borough Group
The Borough Group was a collective of mid-20th-century artists from the Borough area of Southwark, South London. The group was associated with David Bomberg, who was then teaching a number of the artists that formed the group at the Borough Polytechnic, hence the name. Cliff Holden founded the Borough Group in 1946 with the purpose of developing the ideas of fellow artist Bomberg, who taught at the then Borough Polytechnic during the 1940s and 1950s, and was the leading light of the movement. Not to be confused with the later Borough Bottega (1953–c.1955), which was founded later by Bomberg as a consciously hierarchical organisation that emulated his understanding of a Renaissance-style workshop. In 1944, Holden met Bomberg at the City Literary Institute in London where the latter was teaching. David Bomberg House
Borough High Street is a road in Southwark, London, running south-west from London Bridge, forming part of the A3 road, A3 route which runs from London to Portsmouth, on the south coast of England. Overview Borough High Street continues southwest as Newington Causeway, here co-inciding with ancient Stane Street (Chichester), Stane Street, the Roman road between London and Chichester. Another important connection is with the Dover Road (the modern A2 road (Great Britain), A2 route) which diverges in a south-east direction from Borough High Street at a junction of five roads adjacent to Borough tube station, Borough Underground station as Great Dover Street. Borough Road Gallery
The Borough Road Gallery is an art gallery at London South Bank University on Borough Road in south London, England. The gallery celebrates the artist David Bomberg who taught at the Borough Polytechnic, now London South Bank University. The gallery includes the Sarah Rose Collection of his pictures and those of other artists in the Borough Group, totalling around 150 works. The gallery opened in June 2012, financed by the UK Heritage Lottery Fund. Miles Peter Richmond
Miles Peter Richmond (19 December 1922 – 7 October 2008) was a British artist. Biography Born Peter Richmond, in Isleworth, Middlesex, he added the name Miles in the 1980s, and became generally known as such. From 1940 to 1943 he attended Kingston School of Art, and then, as a conscientious objector during World War Two, he worked on the land. This caused a rift with his father, an Admiralty engineer, and was thought by his intimates to account, at least in part, for the palpable emotional depth and passion of his paintings. In 1946, he began training at the Borough Polytechnic in Southwark (now London South Bank University), under David Bomberg, and in the same year he became a founder member of the influential Borough Group of artists. Sir Leslie Lynn Marr of Sunderland, 2nd Baronet (14 August 1922 – 4 May 2021) was a British landscape artist, painter and racing driver. Lilian Holt
Lilian Thirza Charlotte Holt (1898–1983) was a British artist, also known by her married name, Bomberg. She was a founding member of the Borough Group. Her dedication to her partner and family limited her career and opportunities as an artist. Biography The daughter of Oliver Oswald Holt, a civil servant, Holt studied at Putney Art School and took evening classes at Regent Street Polytechnic. In 1914, she started work with the Post Office in London as a telephonist, and served in the Women's Land Army (World War I), Women's Land Army during World War I. Her first marriage, to London art dealer Jacob Mendelson, and the birth of her daughter Dinora Mendelson (1924–2010) (herself an artist, married at one time to Leslie Marr) limited her opportunities to paint during the 1920s but she studied the work of Walter Sickert, Jacob Epstein, Jacob Kramer, and David Bomberg during this time.
