Awoonor-Renner Family
The Awoonor-Renner family or Awunor-Renner family is a Sierra Leone Creole medical, legal, and commercial dynasty with branches of the family in Ghana. The Awoonor-Renner, Awoonor-Wilson, Awoonor-Gordon families are branches of the Awoonor-Williams family that originated from Waterloo, Sierra Leone, and derived "Awoonor" from the Awuna territory in Keta. The Awoonor-Renner family has produced several distinguished doctors, lawyers, and businessmen in Sierra Leone, Ghana, and the United Kingdom. Alongside families such as the Dove family, Easmon family and Smith family, the Awoonor-Renners are among the wealthy ''Aristo'' or aristocratic Creole families. Sierra Leone Creole
The Sierra Leone Creole people ( kri, Krio people) are an ethnic group of Sierra Leone. The Sierra Leone Creole people are lineal descendant, descendants of freed African-American, Afro-Caribbean, and Liberated African slaves who settled in the Western Area of Sierra Leone between 1787 and about 1885. The colony was established by the British, supported by abolitionists, under the Sierra Leone Company as a place for freedmen. The settlers called their new settlement Freetown. Originally published by Longman & Dalhousie University Press (1976). Today, the Sierra Leone Creoles are 1.2 percent of the population of Sierra Leone. Bankole Awoonor-Renner
Bankole Awoonor-Renner (6 June 1898 – 27 May 1970) was a Ghanaian politician, journalist, anti-colonialist and Pan-Africanist. In 1921 Awoonor-Renner travelled to the United States (US) to study journalism at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Whilst studying in the US Awoonor-Renner joined The Communist Party. Early life Bankole Awoonor-Renner was born in Elmina in the Gold Coast, a British colony in West Africa. His father Peter Awoonor-Renner was a lawyer and first leader of the Gold Coast bar. Awoonor-Renner attended boarding school in Cape Coast. Years abroad In 1925 Awoonor-Renner travelled from the US to the Soviet Union along with nine other black men to study at the Communist University of the Toilers of the East (KUTV). George Brigars Williams (8 January 1929 – 1 August 2016) was a Ghanaian actor. Kofi Awoonor
Kofi Awoonor (born George Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor-Williams; 13 March 1935 – 21 September 2013) was a Ghanaian poet and author whose work combined the poetic traditions of his native Ewe people and contemporary and religious symbolism to depict Africa during decolonization. He started writing under the name George Awoonor-Williams, and was also published as Kofi Nyidevu Awoonor. He taught African literature at the University of Ghana. William Esuman-Gwira Sekyi, better known as Kobina Sekyi (1 November 1892, Cape Coast – 20 June 1956), was a nationalist lawyer, politician and writer in the Gold Coast.
