Civic Trust Awards
The Civic Trust Awards scheme is a British awards scheme to recognise outstanding architecture, planning and design in the built environment. It was established in 1959, and is the longest-standing built environment awards scheme in Europe. The Civic Trust Awards is not linked to any organisation, institution, or publication and operates on a not-for-profit basis. The general public is able to participate in nominating and judging schemes from their local area. They may also be awarded internationally. History The Civic Trust Awards were originally established in 1959 by Michael Middleton CBE of the Civic Trust to recognise outstanding architecture, urban design, landscape and public are which improve the quality of life for local communities. The Civic Trust went into administration in April 2009, following the loss of a government contract. International Association Of Lighting Designers
The International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) is a learned society of architectural lighting designers founded in 1969 and based in Chicago. History In 1969, a group of lighting designers — including Ray Grenald and Howard Brandston — established the International Association of Lighting Designers. At that time, all existing industry organizations were primarily focused on the science and engineering of lighting rather than the aesthetic design. One of the founding designers was Lesley Wheel. Originally trained in theatrical lighting design, Wheel had become the first woman to start a career in architectural lighting design. She later served as president of the IALD, and remained a fellow until her death in 2004. Partnerships The IALD has partnered with the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), the Alliance to Save Energy (ASE), and the United States Department of Energy (DOE) to promote sustainable lighting. Chicago Athenaeum
The Chicago Athenaeum is a private museum of architecture and design, based in Galena, Illinois. The museum focuses on the art of design in all areas of the discipline: architecture, industrial and product design, graphics, landscape architecture, and urban planning. Among its goals is to advance public education on how design can positively impact the human environment. The museum awards numerous prizes for architecture and design. History The museum was founded in 1988 in Chicago, moved to Schaumburg, Illinois in 1998, and to Galena, Illinois in 2004. The museum in Galena is located in a former brewery building (Fulton Brewery, later Galena Brewery, Eulberg & Sons). In Schaumburg, the museum occupied an old barn at 190 S. Roselle Rd., before the village evicted it in 2004. The Museum also maintained an International Sculpture Park with works of contemporary art. Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University (, or MSGSÜ) is a public art university in Istanbul, Turkey. The university's campus is located in the Fındıklı, Beyoğlu. The university was established in 1882 under the leadership of Osman Hamdi Bey. Iuav University of Venice () is a university in Venice, Italy. It was founded in 1926 as the Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia as one of the first architecture schools in Italy. Cité De L'Architecture Et Du Patrimoine
The Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine (, ''Architecture and Heritage City'') is a museum of architecture and monumental sculpture located in the Palais de Chaillot ( Trocadéro), in Paris, France. Its permanent collection is also known as Musée national des monuments français (National Museum of French Monuments). It was established in 1879 by Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. The museum was renovated in 2007 and covers 9,000 square meters of gallery space. As a whole, the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine spreads across 22,000 square meters, which makes it the largest museum devoted to architecture in the world, even surpassing the Design Museum of London. Global Award For Sustainable Architecture
The Global Award for Sustainable Architecture is an international architecture founded in 2006 by architect and scholar Jana Revedin. Description Each year, the award honors five architects who "contribute to a more equitable and sustainable development and create an innovative and participatory approach to meet the needs of societies," whether they are experts in economics, construction, or self-development actors for whom sustainability is synonymous with social and urban equity. The Scientific Committee of the Award counts on scholars from the Mimar Sinan University Istanbul, the International Architecture Biennale Ljubljana and the Università Iuav Venice. Erich Schelling
Erich Schelling (11 September 1904 Wiesloch – 14 November 1986 Karlsruhe) was a German architect. He was born in Wiesloch near Heidelberg and studied at the State Technical College (later the Fachhochschule) in Karlsruhe from 1924 to 1928 and the Technical University (today the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), until May 1933. In 1933 and 1934, Schelling joined several Nazi organizations, notably the Sturmabteilung (SA) paramilitary organization and the Reich Chamber of Culture (in its Reich Chamber of Fine Arts subdivision), which had just been founded to repress all art that did not support Nazi ideals. He remained active in all of these organizations until the Nazi Germany, Nazi state fell in 1945, and was promoted in the SA three times. He was made head of the architectural office at Hermann Alker before leaving to set up his own office in Karlsruhe in 1937.
