A.C. Milan, Associazione Calcio Milan is an Italian professional association football, football club based in Milan. The club was founded in December 1899 as Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club, and played their first competitive match on 15 April 1900, when they entered the semi-final of the 1900 Italian Football Championship. Paolo Cesare Maldini (; born 26 June 1968) is an Italian Association football, football executive and former professional Association football, footballer who played as a left back, left-back or as a centre back, centre-back for AC Milan and the Italy national football team, Italy national team. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders of all time. As the Milan and Italy Captain (association football), captain for many years, he was nicknamed "''Il Capitano''". Maldini held the Football records in Italy#Appearances, record for appearances in Serie A (647), until he was surpassed by Gianluigi Buffon in 2020. He also holds the joint-record for most UEFA Champions League, European Cup/UEFA Champions League final appearances (8) alongside Paco Gento.
