1978 saw the launch of the Pioneer Venus missions launched by the United States, on 20 May and 8 August. The Pioneer Venus Multiprobe landed four spacecraft on the planet, one of which transmitted data for 67 minutes before being destroyed by atmospheric pressure. Pioneer Venus Orbiter
The ''Pioneer Venus Orbiter'', also known as ''Pioneer Venus 1'' or ''Pioneer 12'', was a mission to Venus conducted by NASA as part of the Pioneer Venus project. Launched in May 1978 atop an Atlas-Centaur rocket, the spacecraft was inserted into an Elliptic orbit, elliptical orbit around Venus on December 4, 1978. It returned data from Venus until October 1992. The spacecraft conducted radar altimetry observations allowing the first global topographic map of the Venusian surface to be constructed. Soyuz 27
Soyuz 27 (, ''Union 27'') was a 1978 Soviet crewed spacecraft which flew to the orbiting Salyut 6 space station, during the mission EP-1. It was the third crewed flight to the station, the second successful docking and the first visitation mission. Once docked, it marked the first time that three spacecraft were docked together. The main function of the EP-1 mission was to swap Soyuz craft with the orbiting crew, in so doing freeing a docking port for a forthcoming supply tanker. Cosmonauts Vladimir Dzhanibekov and Oleg Makarov returned to Earth in the Soyuz 26 spacecraft after spending five days on the station. Kagoshima Space Center
The is a space launch facility in the Japanese town of Kimotsuki, Kagoshima, Kimotsuki, Kagoshima Prefecture. Before the establishment of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, JAXA space agency in 2003, it was simply called the (KSC).
