Francisco Barreto
Francisco Barreto (occasionally Francisco de Barreto, 1520 – 9 July 1573) was a Portuguese soldier and explorer. An officer in Morocco during his early life, Barreto sailed to Portuguese India and was eventually appointed viceroy of the colony. After his return to Lisbon, he was tasked with an expedition to southeast Africa in search of legendary gold mines. Barreto died in what is now Mozambique, having never reached the mines. Early life Born in Faro in 1520, Barreto was the second son of Rui Barreto, an influential nobleman, and Branca de Vilhena. He received military training in Morocco, and eventually served in Azemmour, near Casablanca. Career in Portuguese India Barreto was appointed captain of a large fleet by John III and embarked for Portuguese India on 16 November 1547. He served as captain of Bassein from 1549 to 1552. Pedro Mascarenhas
D. Pedro Mascarenhas (1480 – 16 June 1555) was a Portuguese explorer and colonial administrator. He was the first European to discover the island of Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean in 1512. He also encountered the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius in 1512, although he may not have been the first Portuguese explorer to do so; earlier expeditions by Diogo Dias and Afonso de Albuquerque along with Diogo Fernandes Pereira may have encountered the islands. In 1528 explorer Diogo Rodrigues (after whom the island of Rodrigues is named) named the islands of Réunion, Mauritius, and Rodrigues the Mascarene Islands, after the name of Mascarenhas. Hemu
Hemu (; 1501 – 5 November 1556), also known as Hemu Vikramaditya and Hemchandra Vikramaditya, was an Indian king (maharaja) who previously served as a general and Vizier, Wazir of Muhammad Adil Shah (died 1557), Adil Shah Suri of the Sur Empire during a period in Indian history when the Mughal Empire, Mughals and Sur Empire, Afghans were vying for power across North India. He fought Afghan rebels across North India from Punjab region, Punjab to Bengal and Mughal Empire, Mughal forces of Humayun and Akbar in Agra and Delhi, winning 22 battles for Adil Shah Suri. Hemu claimed royal status after defeating Akbar's Mughal forces on 7 October 1556 in the Battle of Tughlaqabad, Battle of Delhi and assumed the title of Vikramaditya that many Indian kings had adopted in the past.
