''Blood Money'' is the fifteenth studio album by Tom Waits, released in 2002 on the ANTI- label. The album contains songs written for the musical ''Woyzeck'', based on the play of the same name by Georg Büchner. The theatrical adaptation was directed by Robert Wilson, with whom Waits had worked on two previous plays: ''The Black Rider'' and ''Alice'', both of which resulted in albums. The latter was released simultaneously in 2002 with ''Blood Money''. The play premiered at the Betty Nansen Theatre in Copenhagen in November 2000. Tom Waits
Thomas Alan Waits (born December 7, 1949) is an American musician, composer, songwriter, and actor. His lyrics often focus on the underbelly of society and are delivered in his trademark deep, gravelly voice. He worked primarily in jazz during the 1970s, but his music since the 1980s has reflected greater influence from blues, rock, vaudeville, and experimental genres. Waits was born and raised in a middle-class family in California. Inspired by the work of Bob Dylan and the Beat Generation, he began singing on the San Diego folk music circuit as a young man. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1972, where he worked as a songwriter before signing a recording contract with Asylum Records. ''Woyzeck'' is a 2000 musical with music and lyrics by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, and book by Robert Wilson, based on the unfinished play ''Woyzeck'' by German playwright Georg Büchner. It is Waits, Brennan and Wilson's third collaboration, after the 1990 musical ''The Black Rider'' and the 1992 musical ''Alice''. Waits recorded many of the songs from ''Woyzeck'' for his 2002 album '' Blood Money'', which was released alongside ''Alice'', his recording of songs from the musical ''Alice''. ''Woyzeck'' premiered in November 2000 in a Danish production at the Betty Nansen Teatret in Copenhagen, with dialogue in Danish and songs sung in English; Jens Jørn Spottag played the title role. Ultratop is an organization which generates and publishes the official record charts in Belgium. Ultratop is a non-profit organization, created on the initiative of the Belgian Entertainment Association (BEA), the Belgian member organization of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry. Two parallel sets of charts are concurrently produced and published, one on behalf of Belgium's mainly Dutch-speaking Flanders region, and the other catering to the nation's mainly French-speaking region of Wallonia. ''The Black Rider: The Casting of the Magic Bullets'' is a self-billed "musical fable" in the avant-garde tradition created through the collaboration of theatre director Robert Wilson, musician Tom Waits, and writer William S. Burroughs. Wilson, in the original production, was largely responsible for the design and direction. Burroughs wrote the book, while Waits wrote the music and most of the lyrics. The project began in about 1988 when Wilson approached Waits. The story is based on a German folktale called "Der Freischütz", which had previously been made into an opera by Carl Maria von Weber. It premiered at Hamburg's Thalia Theatre on 31 March 1990, and was performed at Paris's Théâtre du Châtelet on 9 October 1990.
