Billy The Cat And Katie
Billy the Cat is a fictional character first published in the British comic magazine ''The Beano'' in 1967. He is a vigilante dressed in a "cat suit" who stars in his eponymous adventure story, and occasionally teams with Katie Cat. A popular character, Billy the Cat is a prolific figure in DC Thomson's comic magazines, his character appearing in a variety of series and issues of non-''Beano'' magazines. Background In ''The Beano'' 1967 Easter issue, a DC Thomson advert announced a new superhero would feature in the magazine soon. The advert read: "Look at this chap! It's the amazing Billy the Cat! Follow his strange, exciting adventures in the big city—starting in ''The Beano'' next week!" as the artwork depicted a figure in a black outfit running across a roof. David Sutherland (comics Artist)
David Sutherland (born 1933) is a Scottish illustrator and comics artist with DC Thomson, responsible for The Bash Street Kids (1962–present), Dennis the Menace (1970–1998), Fred's Bed (2008–2012) for ''The Beano'', and the second version of Jak for ''The Dandy'' in the early 2000s. He started out as an adventure strip artist, drawing strips such as The ''Beanos The Great Flood of London in 1960–61 (reprinted in Classics From the Comics in 2007) and Billy the Cat (see), before replacing Leo Baxendale as the artist for The Bash Street Kids, who were given the two pages in the centre of the comic at the same time. He has been the strip's main artist since then, during which time he has drawn more than 2000 individual strips for the weekly comic. He also replaced Dudley D. Text comics or a text comic is a form of comics where the stories are told in captions below the images and without the use of speech balloons. It is the oldest form of comics and was especially dominant in European comics from the 19th century until the 1950s, after which it gradually lost popularity in favor of comics with speech balloons. Definition A text comic is published as a series of illustrations that can be read as a continuous story. However, within the illustrations themselves no text is used: no speech balloons, no onomatopoeias, no written indications to explain where the action takes place or how much time has passed. In order to understand what is happening in the drawings the reader has to read the captions below each image, where the story is written out in the same style as a novel. The ''Beano Summer Special'' is like ''The Beano'' with extra comic strips, which as its name suggests, was released in the summer and are considered more valuable than the standard editions.
