Bill Diddel
William H. Diddel (1884 – February 25, 1985) was an American amateur golfer and golf course designer. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. Diddel designed approximately three hundred golf courses, primarily in the midwest United States, beginning with Ulen Country Club in Lebanon, Indiana. Diddel designed the golf course at Northwood Club in Dallas, Texas, which was the site of the 1952 U.S. Open. Diddel was one of the founders and a charter member of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. He was elected president of that body in 1954. Golf
Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Golf, unlike most ball games, cannot and does not use a standardized playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. Courses typically have either 18 or 9 ''holes'', regions of terrain that each contain a ''cup'', the hole that receives the ball. Each hole on a course contains a teeing ground to start from, and a putting green containing the cup. Golf Course
A golf course is the grounds on which the sport of golf is played. It consists of a series of holes, each consisting of a tee box, a fairway, the rough and other hazards, and a green with a cylindrical hole in the ground, known as a "cup". The cup holds a flagstick, known as a "pin". A standard round of golf consists of 18 holes, and as such most courses contain 18 distinct holes; however, there are many 9-hole courses and some that have holes with shared fairways or greens. Lebanon, Indiana
Lebanon (/ˈlɛbnən/) is a city in and the county seat of Boone County, Indiana, United States. The population was 15,792 at the 2010 census. Lebanon is located in central Indiana, approximately northwest of downtown Indianapolis and southeast of Lafayette. History Lebanon was founded in 1832. Northwood Club
Northwood Club is a private country club in Dallas, Texas. It hosted the U.S. Open in 1952, won by Julius Boros, which ended Ben Hogan's streak of titles at three in three attempts; the Fort Worth native led after two rounds but finished in third place. Northwood has since been the host of several Regional USGA, local North Texas PGA, and AJGA tournaments. The course was originally designed by W. H. Diddel, with many large trees lining the fairways and traditional small greens. The course was redesigned in 1990 by Jay Morrish and Tom Weiskopf. The golf course plays to a par of 70 from the championship tees. The Northwood Club golf course consistently ranks in the Top 20 Golf Courses in Texas by The Dallas Morning News.
