Ben Davies (tenor)
Ben Davies (6 January 1858 – 28 March 1943) was a Welsh tenor singer, who appeared in opera with the Carl Rosa Opera Company, in operetta and light opera, and on the concert and oratorio platform. He was spoken of as a successor of Edward Lloyd, as a leading British tenor, and retained something of his style and repertoire in concert performance. Training and operatic career, 1881–1891 Ben Davies was born in Pontardawe, Wales. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London under Alberto Randegger and Signor Fiori. He made his debut in 1881 in Michael Balfe's ''The Bohemian Girl'', and in the following ten years devoted himself principally to the operatic stage. In 1883 he created the role of Gringoire in Arthur Goring Thomas's '' Esmeralda'', in the first Carl Rosa season at Drury Lane Theatre: his future wife Clara Perry was in the cast as Fleur-de-lys. Benjamin Davies (1813 – September 1904) was a merchant and political figure in Prince Edward Island, Canada. He represented 3rd Queens from 1850 to 1854 and 4th Queens from 1867 to 1876 in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island as a Liberal member. Biography He was born in Charlottetown, the son of Nathan Davies, an immigrant from Wales of Huguenot descent, and Amelia MacNutt. In 1813, he married Kezia Attwood Watts. Davies married Eliza Francis Cooke in 1854 after the death of his first wife. He was a lieutenant-colonel in the militia cavalry. Davies served in the province's Executive Council as Postmaster General, Colonial Secretary and chairman of the Railway Board. He operated shipbuilding yards, owned a number of ships and was also an exporter of goods. Davies became ill during the winter of 1903-4 and died in Charlottetown later that year. Benjamin Davies (1814 – 19 July 1875) was a 19th-century Welsh Hebraist. He was son of Silvanus Davies, a Carmarthenshire farmer. Having begun preaching at the age of 15, in 1830 he entered Bristol Baptist College. He subsequently studied in Dublin, Glasgow, and in Leipzig where he obtained a Ph.D. degree, and developed friendships with a number of eminent German Hebraists. On his return in 1838, he was ordained in London, before taking up the post of Principle of Montreal Training College for North American Missionaries (1838–44). In 1844 he was appointed President and Theological Tutor of Stepney Baptist College, London, where he stayed until becoming Professor of Semitics at McGill College, Montreal in 1847. He returned to London in 1857, where he worked at the then Regent's Park Baptist College. Ben Davies (1864 - 1937) was a 19th-century Welsh poet, and an Independent minister. He grew up in Dolgam, a farm where he received some early education at the local school.
