''Before Midnight'' is a 1933 American pre-Code mystery crime film directed by Lambert Hillyer and starring Ralph Bellamy, June Collyer and Claude Gillingwater. Produced and distributed by Columbia Pictures, it was the first in a series of four films featuring Inspector Steve Trent of the NYPD.Backer, p. 195 Bellamy featured in all three sequels '' One Is Guilty'', '' The Crime of Helen Stanley'' and '' Girl in Danger''. Lambert Hillyer
Lambert Harwood Hillyer (July 8, 1893 – July 5, 1969) was an American film director and screenwriter. Biography Lambert Harwood Hillyer was born July 8, 1893, in Tyner, Indiana. His mother was character actress Lydia Knott. A graduate of Drake College, he worked as a newspaper reporter and an actor in vaudeville and stock theater. During World War I he began working in motion pictures and became a prolific director and screenwriter, working on many silent-era Westerns by William S. Hart, Buck Jones, Tom Mix and others. Often associated with producer Thomas H. Ince, Hillyer expanded into romantic melodramas and crime films in the 1920s. In 1936 he directed two chillers for Universal, the science-fiction film '' The Invisible Ray'' and the cult horror film '' Dracula's Daughter''. Fred 'Snowflake' Toones
Fred "Snowflake" Toones (January 5, 1906 – February 13, 1962) was an American actor and comedian. He appeared in over 200 films in his career spanning 23 years. Career He appeared in over 200 films between 1928 and 1951. His standard characterization was that of a middle-aged "colored" man with a high-pitched voice and childlike demeanor. Like ‘Curly’ Howard and Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister, who followed the black tradition of using an antonymous nickname as both their professional name and character name, "Snowflake" was the distinct stage name by which Toones was best known, and he used this name as his credit as early as his third film, 1931's ''Shanghaied Love''. Bob Kortman
Robert F. Kortman (December 24, 1887 – March 13, 1967) was an American film actor mostly associated with westerns, though he also appeared in a number of Laurel and Hardy comedies. He appeared in more than 260 films between 1914 and 1952. Biography The son of a rancher, Kortman was born in Brackettville, Texas, in 1887. He spent six years in the U.S. cavalry. Director Tom Ince cast Kortman as a villain when he began working in films in 1911, and he went on to become the "favored on-screen opponent" for William S. Hart with regard to their film fights. After he left acting, Kortman was president of a cooperative water company in Arrowhead Springs, California, where he lived. Kortman was married to Gonda Durand, a Mack Sennett bathing beauty. He died in Long Beach, California from cancer. Kit Guard
Kit Guard (born Christen Klitgaard May 5, 1894 - July 18, 1961) was a Danish-American actor whose career started in the 1920s. Guard left his birthplace of Hals, Denmark, around the turn of the 20th century, one of five brothers to do so. He moved to San Francisco, and in 1913 he became assistant stage manager and actor at the Alcazar Theatre there. He later acted on stage at the Wigwam Theatre in San Francisco. In World War I, he entertained overseas and later served in the Rainbow Division of the U. S. Army. Guard was a prolific performer, appearing in over 400 films. He appeared with Al Cooke as a comic duo in a number of films from 1923 to 1927. His other film appearances range from ''The Racketeer'' in 1929 to ''The Joker Is Wild'' in 1957, with a number of subsequent uncredited appearances. Otto Yamaoka
Otto Yamaoka (April 25, 1904 – June 5, 1967) was an American actor and businessman who worked in Hollywood primarily during the 1930s. He was one of only a handful of Japanese-descended actors working in the industry at the time. His sister, Iris, was an actress. Biography Otto was born in Seattle, Washington, to Ototaka Yamaoka and Jho Watanabe. The family moved to Los Angeles in the 1920s, and he and his sister Iris both developed an interest in acting; both primarily played smaller roles. His brother, George Yamaoka, became a prominent lawyer. Otto's career in Hollywood ended around 1940, and he then began working as an importer in the Los Angeles area. Joseph A. Creaghan (July 15, 1883 – April 15, 1966) was an American film actor. He appeared in more than 300 films between 1916 and 1965, and notably played Ulysses S. Grant nine times between 1939 and 1958, most memorably in ''Union Pacific'' and ''They Died with Their Boots On''.
