Battle Of Vila Franca Do Campo
The naval Battle of Vila Franca do Campo, also known as Battle of Ponta Delgada and Naval Battle of Isla Terceira, took place on 26 July 1582, off the coast of the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores, during the War of the Portuguese Succession. A combined corsair expedition, mainly French (an Anglo-French fleet with Portuguese forces included), sailed against a Spanish naval force made up of Portuguese and Castilian ships, to preserve control of the Azores under pretender António, Prior of Crato and to defend the islands from incorporation into the Iberian Union—the largest French force sent overseas before the age of Louis XIV. John Hawkins (naval Commander)
Sir John Hawkins (also spelled Hawkyns) (1532 – 12 November 1595) was a pioneering English naval commander, naval administrator and privateer. He pioneered, and was an early promoter of, English involvement in the Atlantic slave trade. Hawkins is considered to be the first English merchant to profit from the Triangle Trade, selling enslaved people from Africa to the Spanish colonies of Santo Domingo and Venezuela in the late 16th century. As Treasurer of the Navy (1578–1595), Hawkins became the chief architect of the Elizabethan Navy, he rebuilt older ships and directed the design of faster ships.
