Barry McClements
Barry McClements (born 6 December 2001) is a para swimmer from Newtownards, Northern Ireland. McClements was born with fibular hemimelia, where part of the fibula is missing; his right leg was amputated above the knee at 10 months old, and he competes in the disability class S9 (classification), S9, SB8, SM9. McClements competed for Ireland at the 2020 Summer Paralympics, his best finish being seventh place in the Swimming at the 2020 Summer Paralympics – Men's 100 metre backstroke#S9, 100 metre backstroke S9. He won a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, at the Swimming at the 2022 Commonwealth Games – Men's 100 metre backstroke S9, 100 m backstroke S9 event, become the first Northern Irish medallist in swimming at the Commonwealth Games. Backstroke
Backstroke or back crawl is one of the four Swimming (sport), swimming styles used in competitive events regulated by FINA, and the only one of these styles swum on the back. This swimming style has the advantage of easy breathing, but the disadvantage of swimmers not being able to see where they are going. It also has a different start from the other three competition swimming styles. The swimming style is similar to an ''upside down'' front crawl or freestyle. Both backstroke and front crawl are long-axis strokes. In individual medley backstroke is the second style swum; in the medley relay it is the first style swum. Fibular Hemimelia
Fibular hemimelia or longitudinal fibular deficiency is "the congenital absence of the fibula and it is the most common congenital absence of long bone of the extremities." It is the shortening of the fibula at birth, or the complete lack thereof. Fibular hemimelia often causes severe knee instability due to deficiencies of the ligaments. Severe forms of fibula hemimelia can result in a malformed ankle with limited motion and stability. Fusion or absence of two or more toes are also common. In humans, the disorder can be noted by ultrasound in utero to prepare for amputation after birth or complex bone lengthening surgery. The amputation usually takes place at six months with removal of portions of the legs to prepare them for prosthetic use.
