Burchard Of Bellevaux
Burchard of Bellevaux (c. 1100-1165) was a Cistercian monk and author who was known for his work ''Apologia de barbis'' (''A Defense of Beards''). A student of the Cistercian reformer Bernard of Clairvaux, in 1136, he became abbot of the , a Benedictine monastery that adopted the Cistercian reforms. After 22 years there, he became the abbot of Bellevaux, where he composed the ''Apologia de barbis'' sometime before his death around 1165. ''Apologia de barbis'' The ''Aplogia de barbis'' was unknown until 1929, when the manuscript was discovered in a Swiss booksellers by E. Goldschmidt, who later produced the first edition of the book in a limited run of 300 copies. The Cistercians (), officially the Order of Cistercians (, abbreviated as OCist or SOCist), are a Catholic religious order of monks and nuns that branched off from the Benedictines and follow the Rule of Saint Benedict, as well as the contributions of the highly influential Bernard of Clairvaux, known as the Latin Rule. Bernard of Clairvaux, Cistercians, O.Cist. (; 109020 August 1153), venerated as Saint Bernard, was an abbot, Mysticism, mystic, co-founder of the Knights Templar, and a major leader in the reform of the Benedictines through the nascent Cistercians, Cistercian Order. Bernard was sent to found Clairvaux Abbey only a few years after becoming a monk at Cîteaux Abbey, Cîteaux. Bellevaux Abbey
Bellevaux Abbey was a Cistercian monastery, founded in 1120 by Pons de Morimond, near the present-day Cirey, Haute-Saône, France. At that time it was in Franche-Comté. It was suppressed in 1790 and sold in 1791. Shortly afterwards the church was demolished. 1795 the buildings were bought by Jean-Charles Pichegru. It was a daughter house of Morimond Abbey. The author Burchard of Bellevaux was abbot from 1158 until about 1165. Peter of Tarentaise died there, as he arrived at the abbey in 1174, giving it his relics. These were for a long time disputed by Tamié Abbey. It had strong connections to the local nobles. Otto de la Roche gave Bellevaux the sacked Daphni Monastery in Greece shortly after 1205. Bellevaux Abbey was sacked in 1474 by French troops, and burned in 1636 by troops from Weimar. Tonsure () is the practice of cutting or shaving some or all of the hair on the scalp as a sign of religious devotion or humility.
