Avakov Is The Devil
Avakov is the devil (Ukrainian: Аваков — чорт) was a slogan used in a series of protests in Ukraine in 2019–2021 against the arbitrariness of the police and particularly the Minister of Internal Affairs, Arsen Avakov. The actions were focused on the person of the minister and were aimed at displacing Avakov from the position of Minister of Internal Affairs. The first action took place on August 28, 2019, as a result of President Zelenskyi's decision to leave Avakov in Honcharuk's government. Etymology The name comes from a combination of two words: Avakov (Minister of Internal Affairs) and "devil" (a slang word that came from prison culture). According to the Ukrainian mass media, the "Avakov is the devil" meme was launched in the public space by Roman Sinitsyn, a volunteer and public activist. Arsen Avakov
Arsen Borysovych Avakov hy, Արսեն Բորիսի Ավակով (born 2 January 1964) is a Ukrainian politician and businessman. From 2014 to 2021 he was Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs, first being appointed in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk. He was reappointed to the same position in three successive governments, the last one being the (March 2020 formed) Shmyhal Government that caused massive protests of the civic society in Ukraine under Avakov is the devil slogan. Between 2005 and 2010, Avakov was Governor of Kharkiv Oblast. In 2013, Avakov was 118th richest person in Ukraine, worth US$100 million. Kateryna Viktorivna Handziuk ( uk, Катерина Вікторівна Гандзюк; 17 June 1985 – 4 November 2018) was a Ukrainian civil rights and anti-corruption activist campaigner and political advisor, who exposed corruption in her hometown of Kherson. She was attacked with sulphuric acid on 31 July 2018, and died from her injuries on 4 November 2018. Education and career Handziuk was born on 17 June 1985 in Kherson (then a city in the Ukrainian SSR of the USSR, now Ukraine). 2020 Kaharlyk Police Rape
The 2020 Kaharlyk police rape took place in May 2020 in Ukraine, garnering extensive media coverage. On May 23, 2020, police officers in the town of Kaharlyk in Kyiv Oblast (province) tortured and raped a woman who was being kept in police custody. The event caused a public outcry. Human rights in Ukraine is a highly contested topic. Since 2017, Freedom House has given Ukraine ratings from 60 to 62 on its 100-point scale, and a "partly free" overall rating.
