Australian Rules Football Positions
In the sport of Australian rules football, each of the eighteen players in a team is assigned to a particular named position on the field of play. These positions describe both the player's main role and by implication their location on the ground. As the game has evolved, tactics and team formations have changed, and the names of the positions and the duties involved have evolved too. There are 18 positions in Australian rules football, not including four (sometimes 6–8) interchange players who may replace another player on the ground at any time during play. The fluid nature of the modern game means the positions in football are not as formally defined as in sports such as rugby or American football. Even so, most players will play in a limited range of positions throughout their career, as each position requires a particular set of skills. Vic Thorp
Victor Charles Thorp (25 October 1890 – 1 October 1941) was an Australian rules footballer for the Richmond Football Club in the Victorian Football League between 1910 and 1925. Nicknamed "Flippa", Thorp was the first true champion player to emerge at Richmond after their admission to the VFL in 1908. A natural defender who showed great judgement, superior ball skills and fierce concentration, Thorp was considered the best player in the game at his position, full back. His battles with Collingwood forward Dick Lee were a highlight of the era. Thorp was one of many great players who grew up in the shadow of the Tigers' Punt Road Oval and served the club loyally for many years, thus influencing the development of the parochial culture of the Richmond club. Darren Gaspar
Darren Gaspar ( ; born 20 May 1976) is a former Australian rules footballer in the Australian Football League (AFL). AFL career Sydney Swans career (1994–1995) Gaspar was drafted with the first pick in the 1993 National Draft by the Sydney Swans. He debuted against the Adelaide Crows in round three of the 1994 AFL season and injured his medial ligament in the third quarter, which resulted in him playing only five games for the year. After only two seasons with the Swans, he turned down a one-year deal and moved to the Richmond Football Club via the 1996 Pre-season Draft. Ashley McIntosh
Ashley McIntosh (born 20 October 1972) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Claremont Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). The son of John McIntosh, who played for Claremont and , McIntosh represented West Coast in 242 games between 1991 and 2003, playing in the club's 1992 and 1994 premierships, and was named in the All-Australian team in 1998. Michael Brennan (footballer)
Michael Brennan (born 29 June 1965) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the East Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and the West Coast Eagles in the Australian Football League (AFL). An inaugural West Coast squad member, Brennan played mainly at full-back. He played in West Coast's 1992 and 1994 premiership sides, and won the Best Clubman award in 1995, his final season. Brennan was named in both West Coast's Team of the Decade (named in 1996) and Team 20 (named in 2006), as well as East Fremantle's Team of the Century, named in 1997. His son, Jacob Brennan, was selected by a West Coast as a father-son selection in the 2010 National draft, and made his debut in round five of the 2012 season. Gary Pert
Gary Pert (born 28 May 1965) is a former Australian rules footballer who represented and in the Australian Football League (AFL). Tall, well-built and strong in the air, Pert played over 200 league games, despite suffering two serious knee injuries in the prime years of his career. Early in one season, Pert suffered a bizarre injury when he went to his girlfriend's house for dinner and got a biscuit stuck in his oesophagus. The blockage remained overnight and so the following day he underwent an oesophagoscopy under general anaesthetic. He recovered in time for the Round 5 game against . Rod Carter
Rod Carter (born 29 October 1954) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Fitzroy and the Sydney Swans in the Victorian Football League (VFL). By the end of his career he was just seven games short of joining the 300 club. Football career A defender, Carter was used mostly at full-back and kicked just the one goal in his 16 seasons of football. That goal came in a game against Melbourne at the SCG in 1986. Gary Malarkey
Gary Robert Malarkey (born 23 May 1953) is a former Australian rules footballer, who represented East Perth ( WAFL), Geelong (VFL/AFL), Geelong West ( VFA), Western Australia, and Victoria. A list of regular opponents that included Hudson, Quinlan, Templeton, Blight and Roach would daunt most defenders but for the hard working and dedicated Gary Malarkey it was all in a day's work. An All Australian and a Victorian as well as West Australian representative prior to state of origin football, Malarkey was recognised as the most effective full back of his era. Kelvin Moore
Kelvin David Moore (born 15 August 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Moore was one of the best full-backs of his era and played in three Hawthorn premierships during his 300-game career between 1970 and 1984. In 2005, Moore was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. He won the club's best and fairest award in 1979, was named at full-back in the Hawthorn Team of the Twentieth Century and was an inaugural member of the Hawthorn's Hall of Fame. He was considered unlucky by many not to be selected at full-back in the AFL Team of the Century. David Dench
David Dench (born 23 August 1951) is a former Australian rules footballer in the (then) Victorian Football League. He played his whole career with North Melbourne Football Club during one of its most successful periods. VFL career Dench played full-back. He was recruited from the West Coburg. Dench won the North Melbourne club's best and fairest award, the Syd Barker Medal, on four occasions - 1971, 1976, 1977, 1981. In 1972 David Dench at the age of 21 he became one of the youngest captains appointed in the ''Kangaroo's'' history. Geoff Southby
Geoff Southby (born 27 October 1950) is a former Australian rules footballer in the (then) Victorian Football League (VFL). An attacking full-back who ran hard from defence and stopped the best full-forwards, Southby was a key contributor to Carlton Football Club's success in the 1970s. In 2000, Southby was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. Chris Langford
Chris Langford (born 2 January 1963) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who has been an AFL Commissioner since 1999. Player Langford is best known for his 303-game career for the Hawthorn Football Club between 1983 and 1997. Langford played his early games for Hawthorn on the wing or as the second ruckman. He had a good leap, which compensated for his lack of height. It was after the retirement of Peter Knights and David O'Halloran that he switched to full-back. It was that position in which he won his first All-Australian selection in 1987. A defender, Langford won four premierships with Hawthorn, in 1986, 1988, 1989 and 1991.
