The Office of the Attorney General of Colombia ( es, Fiscalía General de la Nación; literally "General Prosecutorial Office of the Nation") is the Colombian institution part of the Colombian judicial branch of Government with administrative autonomy designed to prosecute offenders, investigate crimes, review judicial processes and accuse penal law infractions against judges and courts of justice. The Office of the Attorney General was created by the Colombian Constitution of 1991 and began operating on July 1, 1992. The current attorney general is Fernando Carrillo. An investigative process is initiated either by the institutions' own initiative or after a denouncer has made authorities aware of the case in a police station or in a Quick Reaction Unit of the Attorney General's Office. Alfonso Valdivieso Sarmiento (born 2 October 1949) is a Colombian lawyer and politician. Biography Alfonso Sarmiento was born in Bucaramanga, Santander to Roberto Valdivieso Serrano and Mercedes Sarmiento Suárez. He attended ''Divino Niño'' school and ''San Pedro Claver'' school. After graduating from ''Instituto Tecnológico Santandereano'', he moved to Bogotá. He attended Pontifical Xavierian University where he graduated in Law with a concentration in Socio-Political Sciences. Afterwards he moved to the United States where he received a Master of Arts in Global Development Economics (MA GDE) from Boston University, and advanced studies in Urban and Regional Development at Toronto University. Viviane Morales Hoyos
Viviane Aleyda Morales Hoyos (born 17 March 1962) was the 7th Attorney General of Colombia and the first woman to hold that post. She was elected by the Supreme Court of Justice out of a list of three candidates presented by President Juan Manuel Santos Calderón that also included Juan Carlos Esguerra Portocarrero and Carlos Gustavo Arrieta Padilla. On 2 March 2012, she resigned days after her election as Attorney General was invalidated by the Council of State due to irregularities in her election. Mario Germán Iguarán Arana (born 8 June 1960) is a Colombian lawyer and diplomat. He served as Ambassador of Colombia to Egypt between 2010 and 2012.
