Attorney-General Of British Columbia
The attorney general of British Columbia (AG) oversees the Ministry of Attorney General, a provincial government department responsible for the oversight of the justice system, within the province of British Columbia, Canada. The attorney general is a member of the provincial cabinet, typically a member of Legislative Assembly who is chosen by the premier of British Columbia and formally appointed by the lieutenant governor of British Columbia. The attorney general is responsible for ensuring that public administration is conducted according to the law and as such, they are the chief advisor of law to the government, in addition to overseeing the court system and Sheriff Service. Under the ''King's Counsel Act'', the attorney general is automatically appointed a King's Counsel upon swearing into office. Niki Sharma
Niki Sharma is a Canadian politician and lawyer, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in the 2020 British Columbia general election. She represents the electoral district of Vancouver-Hastings as a member of the British Columbia New Democratic Party (BC NDP) and serves as Attorney General of British Columbia. Theodore Davie
Theodore Davie (March 22, 1852 in Brixton, London – March 7, 1898 in Victoria, British Columbia) was a British Columbia lawyer, politician, and jurist. He practised law in Cassiar and Nanaimo before settling in Victoria and becoming a leading criminal lawyer. He was the brother of Alexander Edmund Batson Davie, who served as premier of British Columbia from 1887 to 1889. Theodore Davie was first elected to the provincial legislature in 1882. In 1889, he became attorney-general under Premier John Robson, and succeeded Robson as premier in 1892. Davie's government passed a ''Redistribution Bill'' to give the mainland of the province greater representation in the legislature. His government also provided financial incentives to the railways in an effort to stimulate the economy. Leslie Peterson
Leslie Raymond Peterson, CM, OBC (6 October 1923 – 14 April 2015) was a lawyer, politician, and university chancellor in West Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. He was born in Viking, Alberta, the son of Herman S. Peterson, a native of Norway. Peterson was called to the British Columbia bar in 1949 and set up practice in Vancouver. In 1950, he married Agnes Rose Hine. In 1956, he was first elected to the Legislative Assembly for Vancouver Centre and served for just under 17 consecutive years. He served in the provincial cabinet as Minister of Education and Minister of Labour and then was Attorney General of British Columbia from 1968 to 1972. Robert Bonner (politician)
Robert Bonner, LL.B. (September 10, 1920 – August 12, 2005) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, and corporate executive. He pursued his career working in the British Columbia government and in B.C.-based companies. Bonner was born and raised in Vancouver, and served with the Seaforth Highlanders in Italy in the Second World War. Upon his return to Canada, Bonner took a law degree from the University of British Columbia in 1948, and joined a practice in Vancouver. Active in politics from an early age, Bonner became a supporter and confidant of W.A.C. Bennett, who would go on to lead the Social Credit Party to victory in the 1952 provincial election. Royal Lethington Maitland
Royal Lethington (Pat) Maitland (January 9, 1889 – March 28, 1946) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. He served as Deputy Premier and the Attorney General of British Columbia in the coalition government of Premier John Hart. He also served as national president of the Canadian Bar Association. First term in the British Columbia Legislature Maitland was first elected to the British Columbia Legislature as the Conservative MLA for Vancouver City in the 1928 general election. Gordon Wismer
Gordon Sylvester Wismer (1888 – December 28, 1968) was a lawyer and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Vancouver Centre in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1933 to 1941 and from 1945 to 1952 as a Liberal. He was born in Sutton, Ontario. Wismer served in the provincial cabinet as Attorney General from 1937 to 1941 and from 1946 to 1952 and as Minister of Labour from 1947 to 1949. Wismer was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1941. He was elected to the assembly in the 1945 and 1949 elections as a member of a Liberal-Conservative coalition. In the 1947 provincial Liberal leadership convention, Wismer lost to Byron "Boss" Johnson by 8 votes. Gordon Sloan (politician)
Gordon McGregor Sloan (May 16, 1898 – January 14, 1959) was a lawyer, judge and political figure in British Columbia. He represented Vancouver Centre in the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia from 1933 to 1937 as a Liberal. He was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, the son of William Sloan and Flora Glaholm, and was educated at University School in Victoria and at Langara School in Vancouver. Sloan served as a pilot and instructor in the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force. In 1918, he married Nancy Porter Nicol, a native of Scotland. After the war, Sloan articled in Victoria, was called to the British Columbia bar in 1921 and practised in Vancouver from 1921 to 1933. He served in the provincial cabinet as Attorney-General. Alexander Malcolm Manson (October 7, 1883 – September 25, 1964) was a British Columbia judge and politician in the Liberal Party. John Wallace de Beque Farris, (December 3, 1878 – February 25, 1970) was a Canadian lawyer and politician. Born in White's Cove, New Brunswick, the son of Laughlin P. Farris and Louise Hay, he was educated at St. Martin's Seminary, received his Bachelor of Arts from Acadia University and received his Bachelor of Law from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1905, Farris married Evlyn Fenwick Keirstead of Windsor, Nova Scotia. They had four children : Katherine Hay, Donald Fenwick, Ralph Keirstead and John Lauchlan. William John Bowser ( Rexton, New Brunswick December 3, 1867 – October 25, 1933 Vancouver) was a politician in British Columbia, Canada. He served as the 17th premier of British Columbia from 1915 to 1916. The son of William Bowser and Margaret Gordon, Bowser was educated at Mount Allison University and Dalhousie University.
