''At the Movies'' (also known as ''At the Movies with Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert'') is an American movie review television program that aired from 1982 to 1990. It was produced by Tribune Entertainment and was created by Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert when they left their show '' Sneak Previews'', which they began on Chicago's PBS station, WTTW, in 1975. Background For ''At the Movies'', Siskel and Ebert adopted the same format they had used in their previous series, '' Sneak Previews'': two critics from opposing newspapers view clips from the week's new movies, discuss them, then pass judgment expressed in thumbs up (to approve) or thumbs down (not worth seeing). Gene Siskel
Eugene Kal Siskel (January 26, 1946 – February 20, 1999) was an American film critic and journalist for the '' Chicago Tribune''. Along with colleague Roger Ebert, he hosted a series of movie review programs on television from 1975 until his death in 1999. Siskel started writing for the ''Chicago Tribune'' in 1969, becoming its film critic soon after. In 1975, he was paired with Roger Ebert to co-host a monthly show called ''Opening Soon at a Theater Near You'' airing locally on PBS member station WTTW. In 1978, the show, renamed '' Sneak Previews'', was expanded to weekly episodes and aired on PBS affiliates all around the United States. WTTW (channel 11) is a PBS member television station in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Owned by not-for-profit broadcaster Window to the World Communications, Inc., it is sister to commercial classical music radio station WFMT (98.7 FM).
