Arthur Lee (diplomat)
Arthur Lee (20 December 1740 – 12 December 1792) was a physician and opponent of slavery in colonial Virginia in North America who served as an American diplomat during the American Revolutionary War. He helped negotiate and signed the 1778 Treaty of Alliance with France, along with Benjamin Franklin and Silas Deane, which allied France and the United States in fighting the war. Lee was educated in medicine and law at the University of Edinburgh and in London, respectively. After passing the bar, he practiced law in London for several years. He stayed in London during the Revolutionary War, representing the colonies to Britain and France and also serving as an American spy to track their activities. Arthur Tracy Lee
Arthur Tracy Lee (June 26, 1814 – December 29, 1879) served as an officer in the regular army before and during the American Civil War. He was also an author, painter, musician, and an architect. Early life and career Lee was born in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, to James Lee and Catharine Shriner. As a youth, he studied art in Philadelphia, supposedly under Thomas Sully. On October 3, 1838, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the 5th United States Infantry Regiment, mostly through the influence of Simon Cameron. Less than a month later, on November 1, he was transferred to the 8th United States Infantry Regiment. He assisted in the 1840 removal of Winnebago Indians from Wisconsin and later participated in the Seminole War. While in Florida, he met Margaret Wenthworth Spafford, whom he married on July 27, 1844, at St. Augustine. They had five children, only one of whom survived childhood. Arthur Hamilton Lee, 1st Viscount Lee of Fareham, (8 November 1868 – 21 July 1947), was an English soldier, diplomat, politician, philanthropist and patron of the arts. After military postings and an assignment to the British Embassy in Washington, he retired from the military in 1900. He entered politics, was first elected in 1900, and later served as Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries and First Lord of the Admiralty following the First World War. He donated his country house, Chequers, to the nation as a retreat for the Prime Minister, and co-founded the Courtauld Institute of Art. Lieutenant-Colonel Arthur N. Lee, DSO, OBE, (August 1877- October 1954) was the British military censor in France of paintings by official British war artists during World War I from 1916 to the Peace. Biography Lee was born in Southwell, Nottinghamshire and attended Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating in 1899 and subsequently qualified as a solicitor before becoming a director of the Sheffield cutlery manufacturers Walker & Hall. He was a territorial officer with the Sherwood Foresters from 1903 and on the outbreak of World War I was mobilised with his regiment and sent to the Western Front. In 1916 he served as a Major in Dublin where the Sherwood Foresters suffered heavy losses during the Easter Rising and was awarded the DSO. Arthur Lee (May 4, 1881 – 1961) was an American sculptor, born in Trondheim, Norway. His family immigrated to the United States in 1888, settling in St. Paul, Minnesota. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City before returning to Europe to study the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, as well as in Rome and London. Air Vice Marshal Arthur Stanley Gould Lee, (31 August 1894 – 21 May 1975) was a senior officer of the Royal Air Force (RAF). He began his flying career in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War, scoring seven confirmed victories to become a flying ace and rising to the rank of captain. He continued his service in the RAF, serving throughout the Second World War before retiring in 1946 to devote himself to writing, including several volumes of autobiography. Military career First World War Lee was commissioned as a temporary second lieutenant on 23 February 1915, to serve in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment. Arthur Michael Lee DSC QC (22 August 1913 – 14 January 1983) was an English barrister and judge who had a brief career as a first-class cricketer. He was known as Michael Lee in his legal life. Lee was a right-handed batsman who bowled slow left-arm orthodox spin. He made his first-class debut for Hampshire in 1933 against Somerset. This was his only appearance for Hampshire. In the 1934 season Lee made his debut for Oxford University against Free Foresters. He played for the university in two further first-class matches, one against a Minor Counties side in 1934 and a final match against Yorkshire in 1935. Lee was educated at Winchester College and Brasenose College, Oxford. Arthur George Lee (31 August, 1849, Chelsea – 11 July 1925, Paddington) was an English first-class cricketer and clergyman. The son of John Benjamin Lee, he was born in August 1849 at Chelsea. He was educated at Westminster School, where he was coached in cricket by Thomas Hearne. From Westminster he went up to University College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1868. He graduated B.A. in 1872, and M.A. in 1877. While studying at Oxford, he played first-class cricket for Oxford University Cricket Club on four occasions between 1868 and 1871, scoring 22 runs with a high score of 16 not out. After graduating from Oxford, Lee took holy orders in the Church of England. His first ecclesiastical post was as vicar of Chippenham in Cambridgeshire from 1878 to 1886, after which he served as the rector of Langham, Suffolk.
