Christa Zander Welger (June 1939 – May 30, 2019) was a German-born wheelchair athlete. She represented West Germany and later the United States in various international events. Early life Christa Zander was raised in Berlin during World War II, and then in West Berlin after the city was partitioned. She was paralyzed by polio at a young age, and developed physical strength in sports, including swimming and field events. Career As a young woman, Zander belonged to the Handicapped Sports League of Berlin, and worked in a factory. She represented West Germany at the 1958 and 1959 Stoke Mandeville Games. She won eight medals at the 1960 Summer Paralympic Games in Rome. Daphne Ceeney
Daphne Jean Hilton (née Ceeney; 7 January 1934 – 25 July 2016) was an Australian Paralympic competitor. She was the first Australian woman to compete at the Paralympic Games. She won fourteen medals in three Paralympics in archery, athletics, fencing, swimming, and table tennis from 1960 to 1968. Personal Ceeney was born in the New South Wales town of Harden-Murrumburrah on 7 January 1934, as the eldest of four children. She became a paraplegic after breaking her back in a horse-riding accident in 1951 at the age of 17. She spent 9 months in Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital before returning to Murrumburrah. Eight years after the accident, she moved to Sydney, where she spent six months at the Cherrywood Rehabilitation Centre and then one year at Mt Wilga Rehabilitation Hospital. Joan Horan
Joan Horan (26 February 1918 – 9 December 1965) was an Irish paralympic athlete, and the first Irish woman to compete in the Paralymic Games. Early life and family Joan Horan was born Joan Dempsey at 7 Merrion Square, Dublin on 26 February 1918. Her father was Dr Patrick Dempsey, an ear, nose and throat surgeon at the Mater Hospital and Monica Dempsey (née Plunkett). She had one older sister. She attended Alexandra College, Dublin, and St Mary's School Ascot, Berkshire, England. She attended the Central School of Dramatic Art at the Royal Albert Hall, London for 3 years, attaining minor stage and film roles. During the 1940s she acted with the Dublin Players troupe. On 28 October 1941 at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Donnybrook she married Desmond Horan, the only son of Gerald Horan KC, master of the high court. They had two sons. Margaret Harriman is a Paralympic athlete from South Africa. She was born in Great Britain. She was the only lady to compete in the netball tournament of the second Stoke Mandeville Games in 1949 under her maiden name of Margaret Webb. From 1960 to 1976 she competed in the Summer Paralympics in many sports, including archery, athletics, dartchery, lawn bowls and swimming. Margaret Maughan
Margaret Maughan (19 June 192820 May 2020) was a British competitive archer, dartcher and bowls competitor. She was Britain's first gold medallist at the Paralympic Games, and won four gold and two silver medals at the Games. She lit the cauldron at the Olympic Stadium in London at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Early life Maughan was from Lancashire, England, and was one of four children. Her father was a miner. Maughan worked as a science teacher. Maughan was paralysed from the waist down and left unable to walk by a road accident in Nyasaland (now Malawi) in 1959. After being in hospital in Nyasaland for two months, she returned to Britain and was treated at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where spinal injury unit founder Ludwig Guttmann pioneered the use of sport in therapy.
