Great Amwell
Great Amwell is a village and civil parish in the East Hertfordshire district, in the county of Hertfordshire, England. It is southeast of Ware and about north of London. History On a hill above the church there are some traces of an Iron Age hill fort, but more substantial remains of the earthworks were destroyed by landscaping of the Old Vicarage gardens in about 1840. To the west, on the road to Hertford, is a large tumulus at Barrowfield. In the Domesday Book of 1086 Great Amwell and neighbouring Little Amwell were a single parish recorded as "Emmewell". By the 17th century, the name of the village was recorded as Amwell Magna, Much Amwell or Great Amwell. The name is probably derived from a spring to the northeast of the village called Emma's Well, which was used by Sir Hugh Myddelton as one of the sources of the New River in the early 17th century. Little Amwell
Little Amwell was a village and civil parish in Hertfordshire, England, lying south-east of the county town of Hertford. The old village of Little Amwell forms the northern part of the modern village of Hertford Heath. The civil parish of Little Amwell was abolished in 1990, merging with parts of the neighbouring parishes of Great Amwell, Stanstead St Margarets, and Ware to form the new parish of Hertford Heath. Little Amwell remains the name of the ecclesiastical parish which covers Hertford Heath. In 1961 the parish had a population of 982. History At the time of the Domesday Book in 1086 Little Amwell and neighbouring Great Amwell seem to have been a single parish called Amwell, recorded as "Emmewell". Little Amwell was later acquired by the monks of Waltham Abbey, who annexed it to the parish of All Saints, Hertford, which the abbey also owned. Wheathampstead is a village and civil parishes in England, civil parish in Hertfordshire, England, north of St Albans. The population of the ward (politics), ward at the 2001 United Kingdom Census 2001, census was 6,058. Included within the parish is the small hamlet of Amwell. History Settlements in this area were made about 50 BC by Belgae, Belgic invaders. They moved up the rivers River Thames, Thames and River Lea, Lea from what is now Belgium. Evidence for them was found in Devil's Dyke, at the eastern side of Wheathampstead. The Devil's Dyke, Hertfordshire, Devil's Dyke earthworks are part of the remains of an ancient settlement of the Catuvellauni and thought to have been the tribe's original capital. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , all of it land. History Amwell Township was one of the original 13 townships in Washington County. West Amwell Township is a township in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the township's population was 3,840, reflecting an increase of 1,457 (+61.1%) from the 2,383 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 132 (+5.9%) from the 2,251 counted in the 1990 Census. Amwell Valley
The Amwell Valley is a small valley in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, between the Hunterdon Plateau and the Sourlands. It comprises Stockton, parts of Delaware Township, West Amwell, East Amwell, Flemington and Raritan Township. The region borders the Delaware River to the west and the South Branch Raritan River to the east. The entire area has elevations around 200 feet above sea level. US 202 (including a shared section with NJ 31) is the main route running west to east through the valley. Old York Road also passes through the valley, taking a generally more southern route (Old York crosses 202 twice in the area) through Raritan and along the Sourlands at Mount Airy. Like the Hunterdon Plateau, Amwell Valley still has a large number of farms due to its sufficient climate, relatively flat land and the presence of silt-loams soils.
