Amelia And The Angel
''Amelia and the Angel'' is a 1958 British film directed by Ken Russell. It was his second completed film after ''Peep Show''. The movie was seen by Huw Wheldon and led to his offering Russell a full-time job. Plot A schoolgirl, Amelia, attempts to find an angel costume in time to appear in her school play. Cast *Mercedes Quadros as Amelia Production Russell was then a photographer who wanted to get into the film industry and thought of the idea. He says he was influenced by '' La Belle et Bete'' and ''The Red Balloon''. Quadros was the daughter of an uruguayan diplomat and was recommended to Russell by a friend. Ken Russell
Henry Kenneth Alfred Russell (3 July 1927 – 27 November 2011) was a British film director, known for his pioneering work in television and film and for his flamboyant and controversial style. His films in the main were liberal adaptations of existing texts, or biographies, notably of composers of the Romantic music, Romantic era. Russell began directing for the BBC, where he made creative adaptations of composers' lives which were unusual for the time. Huw Wheldon
Sir Huw Pyrs Wheldon, (7 May 1916 – 14 March 1986) was a Welsh broadcaster and BBC executive. Early life Wheldon was born on 7 May 1916 in Prestatyn, Flintshire, Wales. He was educated at Friars School, Bangor, at the time an all-boys grammar school, and graduated with a BSc(Econ) degree from the London School of Economics in 1938. His father, Sir Wynn Wheldon, was a prominent educationalist who had been awarded the DSO for gallantry in the First World War. His grandfather, Tomos Jones Wheldon, had been the Moderator of the Calvinist Methodist Church in Wales. His mother, Megan Edwards, was an accomplished pianist. Military service On the outbreak of war in 1939, Wheldon enlisted in the Buffs. He was commissioned into the Royal Welch Fusiliers in 1940, but subsequently volunteered for the airborne forces and joined the Royal Ulster Rifles, with whom he flew into Normandy. The Red Balloon
''The Red Balloon'' (french: Le ballon rouge) is a 1956 French fantasy comedy-drama featurette written, produced, and directed by Albert Lamorisse. The thirty-four-minute short, which follows the adventures of a young boy who one day finds a sentient, mute, red balloon, was filmed in the Ménilmontant neighborhood of Paris. Lamorisse used his children as actors in the film. His son, Pascal, plays himself in the main role, and his daughter, Sabine, portrays a young girl. The film won numerous awards, including an Oscar for Lamorisse for writing the Best Original Screenplay in 1956 and the Palme d'Or for short films at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. Shirley Ann Russell
Shirley Ann Russell (11 March 1935 – 4 March 2002) was a British costume designer, who was nominated for Academy Awards for her designs on '' Agatha'' (1979) and ''Reds'' (1981). Career Russell studied Fashion at Walthamstow College of Art, and she later attended the Royal College of Art. She ran her own firm of film costumiers, called ''The Last Picture Frock'', particularly specialising in 1930s and 1940s clothing. The firm was sold to the costumier ''Angels'' in the 1970s. Her interest in historic costume began when she assisted Doris Langley Moore, the founder of the Bath Costume Museum. Russell's costume designs were detailed and nuanced, using costume to show subtle distinctions in class. She was known for the weight and authenticity her design lent to characters.
