The Allende family is a Chilean family of Spanish descent. They became well known during the 19th century and are based in Santiago. They have played a very significant role in Chilean politics. 1988 Chilean National Plebiscite
The 1988 Chilean national plebiscite was a national referendum held on 5 October 1988 to determine whether Chile's ''de facto'' leader, Augusto Pinochet, should extend his rule for another eight years through 1996. The "No" side won with nearly 56% of the vote, indicating the end of Pinochet's fifteen and a half years in power. After democratic elections in 1989, a new government took power in 1990. The fact that the dictatorship respected the results is attributed to pressure from big business and the international community, and unease with extended rule by Pinochet within the dictatorship. Lux Balmaceda Pascal (born 4 June 1992) is an American-born Chilean actress and transgender activist. Biography Born in California as Lucas Balmaceda, she is the child of José Balmaceda and Verónica Pascal, both Chileans exiled after the 1973 coup, because her mother was the cousin of Andrés Pascal Allende, leader of the Chilean Revolutionary Left Movement. She was the last of four siblings, among whom is the actor Pedro Pascal. At the age of three she returned to Chile with her parents and brother Nicolás. In Chile she studied at Saint George's College, and in 2010 she entered to study theater at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. Paula Frías Allende
Paula Frías Allende (22 October 1963 – 6 December 1992) was an educator and humanitarian who was the daughter of Chilean-American author Isabel Allende. Her grandfather was first cousin to Salvador Allende, President of Chile from 1970 to 1973. After her death, her mother started a foundation to continue works in Paula's name. Life Allende worked as a humanitarian for impoverished communities located in Venezuela and Spain, using her skills as an educator and psychologist. She married Ernesto Diaz in Venezuela, in 1991. Illness and death In 1991, Paula went into a coma after complications of porphyria had hospitalised her. An error in medication resulted in severe brain damage, leaving her in a persistent vegetative state. Andrés Pascal Allende
Andrés Pascal Allende (born July 12, 1943) is a Chilean Marxist dissident and nephew of former President Salvador Allende. He is of Basque people, Basque and Belgians, Belgian descent. He was born in Santiago, Chile, Santiago, the son of Gastón Pascal Lyon and of Laura Allende. He studied at Saint George's College, Santiago (class of 1962). He is former leader of the Revolutionary Left Movement (Chile), Movement of the Revolutionary Left along with Miguel Enríquez (politician), Miguel Enríquez. After the Chilean coup of 1973, and upon original leader Miguel Enriquez's death in 1974, Andrés Pascal Allende took control of the MIR. Pascal's leadership stint ended relatively quickly when he fled Chile in 1976 for Cuba. Laura Allende Gossens (3 September 1911 – 23 May 1981) was a Chilean politician, a member of the Chamber of Deputies of Chile, lower chamber of parliament and sister of former president of Chile Salvador Allende.
