Alex Smith (footballer, Born 1876)
Alexander Smith (7 November 1875 – 12 November 1954) was a Scottish footballer who played as an outside left for Rangers and the Scotland national team. Career Born in Darvel, Ayrshire, Smith signed for Rangers in April 1894 from local side Darvel F.C., having been introduced at the suggestion of Nicol Smith (a defender who had made the same move a year earlier and came from the same village, but was not a relation). He stayed with the Ibrox club for 21 years until retiring in 1915, was part of Rangers' treble-winning ( Scottish Football League title, Glasgow Cup and Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup) teams of 1896–97, 1899–1900 and 1910–11, and played in 69 of the club's 74 matches during their run of four consecutive championships from 1898 to 1902. In total he made 642 competitive appearances for his only professional club (the fourth-highest tally in their long history) and scored 200 goals. Darvel
Darvel ( sco, Dairvel, gd, Darbhail) is a small town in East Ayrshire, Scotland. It is at the eastern end of the Irvine Valley and is sometimes referred to as "The Lang Toon" ( en, the Long Town). The town's Latin motto, , means "Not for ourselves, but for others". Location Darvel is situated on the A71 road that runs from Irvine on the west coast to Edinburgh on the east. The town is east of Kilmarnock and is the most easterly of the Irvine Valley Towns, the others being Galston and Newmilns. The town was once linked with Stonehouse (via Strathaven) by the Caledonian Railway. However, the line was closed by the LMS before the Second World War. The former Glasgow and South Western Railway branch line to Kilmarnock survived for much longer and was closed in 1964 as part of the Beeching Axe. List Of Scottish Football Champions
The Scottish football champions are the winners of the highest league in Scottish football, namely the Scottish Football League (SFL) from 1890 until 1998, the Scottish Premier League (SPL) from 1998 until 2013 and the Scottish Premiership thereafter. The SFL was established in 1890, initially as an amateur league until professionalism in Scottish football was legalised in 1893. At the end of the first season Dumbarton and Rangers finished level on points at the top of the table. The rules in force at the time required that the teams contest a play-off match for the championship, which finished in a 2–2 draw, and the first ever championship was thus shared between two clubs, the only occasion on which this has happened. 1904–05 Scottish Division One
The 1904–05 Scottish Division One season was won by Celtic. They and Rangers had finished the league campaign level on 41 points, and a play-off at Hampden Park (doubling up as a fixture in the minor Glasgow Football League) was arranged to decide the championship. An English-based referee was drafted in to officiate at the match due to increasing tensions between the two groups of supporters and controversies in recent matches between the sides. Celtic won 2–1, with Jimmy McMenemy and Davie Hamilton scoring the decisive goals.
