Sormovsky City District (russian: Со́рмовский райо́н), or Sormovo (russian: Со́рмово), is one of the eight districts of the city of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. It occupies the northwestern corner of the city, adjacent to the Volga River. Population: The village originally known as Soromovo () had existed since 1542. In 1849, the Sormovo Works—soon one of Russia's most important machine-building plants, later known as Krasnoye Sormovo—was founded; its owner had the village renamed to more euphonic ''Sormovo''. Nizhny Novgorod Fair (''old name — Makaryev Fair'') (russian: Нижегородская ярмарка) was a fair in Nizhny Novgorod held annually every July near Makaryev Monastery on the left bank of the Volga River from the mid-16th century to 1816. Following a massive fire in 1816, it was moved to Nizhny Novgorod, but for some decades thereafter it still was commonly referred to as Makaryev Fair. It attracted many foreign merchants from India, Iran, and Central Asia. According to Durland, a journalist who visited the fair in 1905, the fair dates from "before the discovery of America." The fair was established by Muscovite princes to compete with, and draw commerce away from, a fair held since 1257, at Kazan, the Tartar capital. Kanavinsky City District (russian: Канавинский район), or simple Kanavino, is a district ('' raion'') of the city of Nizhny Novgorod, Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, Russia. Population: District history Kanavinsky district is one of the oldest districts of Nizhny Novgorod. The first mention of it as the Kunavinskaya Sloboda dates back to 1599. The exact etymology of the name is unknown, but some philologists believe that it comes from the name of the kuna currency. Another version of the origin is the patronymic: from the Erzya female pagan name Kunava, denoting the wife of a noble person, the queen, who probably owned these lands. Avtozavodsky City District (russian: Автозаво́дский райо́н, lit=District of the Automobile Plant) or Avtozavod () is one of the eight districts of the city of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.
