Avenger (1986 Video Game)
''Way of the Tiger II: Avenger'' is a video game released in 1986 by Gremlin Graphics for the Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, Thomson computers, and MSX. it is based on gamebook series Way of the Tiger. Gameplay Yaemon the Grand Master of Flame has killed the player's foster-father Naijish and stolen the Scrolls of Kettsuin. To recover the scrolls, the player must find enough keys to penetrate the Quench Heart Keep, and then kill each of the three guards. The game is viewed from above and superficially resembles '' Gauntlet''. Reception Guy Langley for ''Computer and Video Games'' compared the game to '' Gauntlet'', noting that ''Avenger'' was more of an adventure and has "smarter graphics". Rich Pelley for ''Your Sinclair'' gave the game a rating of 86 and praised its variety, with elements of maze games, beat-em ups, and puzzlers. Gremlin Graphics
Gremlin Graphics Software Limited, later Gremlin Interactive Limited and ultimately Infogrames Studios Limited, was a British software house based in Sheffield, working mostly in the home computer market. Like many software houses established in the 1980s, their primary market was the 8-bit range of computers such as the ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, MSX, Commodore 16 and Commodore 64. The company was acquired by French video game publisher Infogrames in 1999 and was renamed Infogrames Studios in 2000. Infogrames Studios closed down in 2003. History The company, originally a computer store called Just Micro, was established as a software house in 1984 with the name Gremlin Graphics Software Ltd by Ian Stewart and Kevin Norburn with US Gold's Geoff Brown owning 75% of the company until mid-1989. Argus Press was a British publishing company. It was acquired by British Electric Traction (BET) in 1966, and became the publishing arm of that company. It was the subject of one of the most hotly contested management buyouts of the 1980s when a management team led by Kimble Earl, George Fowkes, and Scott Smith secured financing of £207m from forty national and international banks to acquire the UK and US businesses from BET. The acquisition was of particular note as the publisher Robert Maxwell was among the rival bidders, and widely considered as capable of out-witting the management team. Amstrad plc was a British consumer electronics company, founded in 1968 by Alan Sugar. During the 1980s, the company was known for its home computers beginning with the Amstrad CPC and later also the ZX Spectrum range after the Sinclair deal, which led it to have a substantial share of the home computer market in Britain. In the following decade it shifted focus towards communication technologies, and its main business during the 2000s was the manufacture of satellite television set-top boxes for Sky, which Amstrad had started in 1989 as the then sole supplier of the emerging Sky TV service. ''Commodore User'', (also referred to as ''CU'') later renamed to ''CU Amiga'', is a British magazine initially published by Paradox Group before being acquired by EMAP. Timeline ''Commodore User'' was launched in October 1983 with an initial preview issue in June 1983. Initially, the magazine contained information about in-depth computer information of its time, such as programming tutorials, machine code features, and business software reviews. The first issues were produced and written by editor Dennis Jarrett, writer and future editor Bohdan Buciak, and editorial assistant Nicky Chapman. Features were written by a range of contributors, and the issue sizes grew rapidly from 64 to 96 pages. The first 12 issues of Commodore User were published by Paradox Group until September 1984; thereafter, publishing was handled by EMAP until the final issue in February 1990. ''Amtix'' (stylized as ''AMTIX!'') is a magazine that originally reviewed Amstrad CPC computer software in the mid-1980s, published monthly by Newsfield Publications Ltd. Unlike ''Zzap!64'' and '' CRASH'' (its more successful sister publications from Newsfield), the original version of ''Amtix!'' was relatively short-lived. It ran for 18 issues in total between November 1985 and April 1987, plus a special preview issue (''Issue zero'') which was given away with ''Zzap!64'' and ''CRASH''. After issue 18, ''Amtix!'' was sold to Database Publications who merged the ''Amtix!'' games sections into their own ''Computing With the Amstrad'' magazine. Like ''Zzap!64'' and ''Crash'', ''Amtix!'' had very distinctive, comic-style cover art, drawn by Oliver Frey. In September 2021 the magazine was relaunched as a quarterly A5 publication by Fusion Retro Books under the title AMTIXCPC Micro Action.
