Atholl
Atholl or Athole ( gd, Athall; Old Gaelic ''Athfhotla'') is a large historical division in the Scottish Highlands, bordering (in anti-clockwise order, from Northeast) Marr, Badenoch, Lochaber, Breadalbane, Strathearn, Perth, and Gowrie. Historically it was a Pictish kingdom, becoming one of the original provinces of the Kingdom of Alba before being incorporated into the sheriffdom and later county of Perthshire. Today it forms the northern part of Perth and Kinross, Scotland. Etymology In Scottish Gaelic the name is ''Athall'', which traditionally has been interpreted as deriving from the Old Irish ''Ath-fhotla'', or 'New Ireland' ( Fotla being a traditional name for Ireland). The explanation given for this relates to a conjectured Gaelic settlement of Scotland, which was previously inhabited by the Picts. James E. Duke of Atholl, named for Atholl in Scotland, is a title in the Peerage of Scotland held by the head of Clan Murray. Earl Of Atholl
The Mormaer or Earl of Atholl was the title of the holder of a medieval comital lordship straddling the highland province of Atholl (''Ath Fodhla''), now in northern Perthshire. Atholl is a special Mormaerdom, because a King of Atholl is reported from the Pictish period. The only other two Pictish kingdoms to be known from contemporary sources are Fortriu and Circinn. Indeed, the early 13th century document known to modern scholars as the ''de Situ Albanie'' repeats the claim that Atholl was an ancient Pictish kingdom. In the 11th century, the famous Crínán of Dunkeld may have performed the role of Mormaer. Royal connections continued with Máel Muire, who was the son of King Donnchad I, and the younger brother of Máel Coluim III mac Donnchada. Atholl MacGregor
Sir Alasdair Duncan Atholl MacGregor KC (4 June 1883 – 30 October 1945) was a British lawyer and judge. He served as Attorney General in a number of British colonies in the early 20th century. He was Chief Justice of Hong Kong from 1933 to 1945. MacGregor's given names MacGregor generally used the Christian name Atholl. In some sources it is spelt Athol. However, official announcements, such as his appointments and honours published in the ''London Gazette'', refer to him, as would be expected, by his full name of Alasdair Duncan Atholl MacGregor. Early life MacGregor was born in 1883, the son of Henrietta Forrester and her husband, Robert Roy MacGregor. His father worked for the Exchequer. The family lived at 55 Grange Loan in south Edinburgh. Atholl attended the University of Edinburgh, where he graduated with an MA, followed by Lincoln College, Oxford, where he obtained a BA. Atholl Henry McKinnon (20 August 1932 in Port Elizabeth, Cape Province – 2 December 1983 in Durban, Natal) was a South African cricketer who played in eight Tests from 1960 to 1966. McKinnon attended Grey High School, a school famous for its sporting achievements. A left-arm spinner, he toured England with the South African teams in 1960 and 1965, the only player to go on both tours.''Wisden'' 1984, p. 1204. He represented Eastern Province in the Currie Cup from 1952–53 to 1962–63, and Transvaal from 1963–64 to 1968–69. He later became a coach. Sir Edward Atholl Oakeley, 7th Baronet of Shrewsbury (31 May 1900 – January 1987), known under the ring name Atholl Oakeley, was a British professional wrestler and wrestling promoter who was one of the pioneers of professional wrestling in the United Kingdom. He was Britain's first heavyweight all-in wrestling champion, and held the title from 1930 to 1935. He became the European heavyweight champion in 1932. Cape Atholl ( da, Kap Atholl), also known as Kangaarasuk, is a headland in Northwest Greenland, Avannaata municipality. This cape was named by Commander James Saunders, after Atholl, the class to which his ship HMS ''North Star'' belonged, during the winter 1849–50 in which he was frozen in the bay to the north and named landmarks in the area. Atholl Highlanders
The Atholl Highlanders is a Scottish ceremonial infantry regiment. They are the only remaining private army in Europe, and act as the personal bodyguard to the Duke of Atholl, chieftain of the Clan Murray, a family that has thrived in Perthshire for some 750 years. Although it has no official military role, this hand-picked body of local men are armed with Lee–Metford rifles, and the regiment includes a pipe band. Joining the Highlanders is by invitation-only from the Duke, who specially selects men with ties to the estate or the local area. The regiment is not part of the British Army but under the command of the Duke of Atholl, and based at Blair Castle, Blair Atholl.
