Athletics At The Pacific Games
Athletics (sport), Athletics competitions have been held at every Pacific Games since the inaugural edition 1963 South Pacific Games, 1963 in Suva, Fiji and at every Pacific Mini Games since the inaugural edition 1981 South Pacific Mini Games, 1981 in Honiara, Solomon Islands. Both events are open for the 22 member federations of the Pacific Games#Pacific Games Council, Pacific Games Council. The Pacific Games started as ''South Pacific Games'' and were renamed in 2011, whereas the Pacific Mini Games started as ''South Pacific Mini Games'' and were renamed in 2009. 1975 South Pacific Games
The 5th South Pacific Games, also known as Guam 1975 (), held in Tamuning and Hagåtña, Guam from 1 to 10 August 1975, was the fifth edition of the South Pacific Games. A total of 1,205 athletes (907 men and 298 women) participated in a rain-affected games which had only one clear day out of the ten scheduled. The hosting of the event, originally planned for 1974, had met trouble from the start. Carlos Camacho, the Governor of Guam, had been opposed to spending any government money on the games. The impasse was broken in late 1973 and the games were rescheduled for 1975. However, preparations for the events did not progress smoothly, and visiting teams were disappointed with the condition of some of the venues and the scheduling in the middle of the rainy season. 2015 Pacific Games
The 15th Pacific Games, also known as Port Moresby 2015 or POM 2015, was held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, from 4 to 18 July 2015. It was the fifteenth staging of the Pacific Games as well as the third to be hosted in Port Moresby. More than 3,700 athletes from the 22 Pacific Games Associations plus first time entrants Australia and New Zealand, took part. With almost 300 sets of medals, the games featured 28 sports, 19 of which are on the 2016 Summer Olympics program. Only men's association football, football was a straight qualifying event for Football at the 2016 Summer Olympics, Rio 2016. These sporting events took place in 14 venues in the host city. 2011 Pacific Games
The 14th Pacific Games (), also known as NC 2011 or Nouméa 2011, took place in Nouméa, New Caledonia, from August 27 to September 10, 2011. Nouméa was the 14th host of the Pacific Games. Upon closure of the registration for entries, "some 4,300 athletes" had registered from the twenty-two competing nations, although it was expected that not all would attend. The 13th South Pacific Games (), also known as Apia 2007, were held from 25 August to 8 September 2007 in Apia, Samoa. The Games were the thirteenth to be held since the inception of the South Pacific Games in 1963, and included traditional multi-sport event disciplines, such as athletics and swimming, alongside region-specific and smaller events such as outrigger canoeing, surfing and lawn bowls. The principal venue for the Games was Apia Park, with other events taking place at the Faleata Sporting Complex and at other locations around Samoa. The cost of the games was reported to be US$92 million and resulted in significant government debt for Samoa due to infrastructure projects which included replacement bridges and roads. The 12th South Pacific Games (), also known as Suva 2003, were held in Suva, Fiji from 28 June to 12 July 2003. The Games were the 12th ''South Pacific Games'' to be held since the event's inception and were the 40th anniversary of their beginnings in 1963. It was also the third time in the event's history that they had been hosted in Suva. For the first time, the Games included both traditional multi-sport event disciplines such as athletics and swimming together with region-specific and smaller events such as outrigger canoeing, surfing and lawn bowls. The 9th South Pacific Games, also known as Port Moresby 1991 () held on 7–21 September 1991 in Port Moresby and Lae, Papua New Guinea, was the ninth edition of the South Pacific Games. The 8th South Pacific Games (), also known as Nouméa 1987, held on 8–20 December 1987 in Nouméa, New Caledonia, was the eighth edition of the South Pacific Games. Political events of the time affected the Games in 1987 and the number of competitors were down. Fiji had two military coups in 1987, and within New Caledonia itself, the Games became a focus of protest in the Kanak independence struggle. Apia () is the Capital (political), capital and largest city of Samoa. It is located on the central north coast of Upolu, Samoa's second-largest island.
