American Story (radio Program)
''American Story'' is an American radio anthology program that was broadcast on NBC February 5, 1944 - July 15, 1944 and July 13, 1945 - September 7, 1945. It traced "the history, development and fulfillment of the literature of the Americas" as part of the '' NBC Inter-American University of The Air'', the third permanent radio series presented as part of that program. In addition to the NBC presentations, episodes were broadcast in French in Canada and in Spanish in Peru. Background Archibald MacLeish, who was then the librarian of Congress, created ''American Story'' and developed the concept into a program. He said that people in the Americas did not realize how much their backgrounds had in common, and he thought that lack of understanding was "one reason the Americas find it so difficult to get along, one with the other". The ''Birmingham Gazette'', known for much of its existence as ''Aris's Birmingham Gazette'', was a newspaper that was published and circulated in Birmingham, England, from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Founded as a weekly publication in 1741, it moved to daily production in 1862, and was absorbed by the ''Birmingham Post'' in 1956. The ''Pasadena Star-News'' is a paid local daily newspaper for the greater Pasadena, California area. The Pasadena ''Star-News'' is a member of Southern California News Group (formerly the Los Angeles Newspaper Group), since 1996. Duell, Sloan and Pearce was a publishing company located in New York City. It was founded in 1939 by C. Halliwell Duell, Samuel Sloan and Charles A. Pearce. It initially published general fiction and non-fiction, but not westerns, light romances or children's books. It published works by many prominent authors, including Archibald MacLeish, John O'Hara, Erskine Caldwell, Anais Nin, Conrad Aiken, Wallace Stegner, E.E. Cummings, Howard Fast and Dr. Benjamin Spock. KOA (850 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station licensed to Denver, Colorado. Owned by iHeartMedia, it serves the Denver-Boulder media market.
