Al-Wāḥa
(, "The Oasis") is an language immersion, immersion-based Arabic-language camp for students between the ages of 7 and 18 associated with Concordia Language Villages. It was established in 2006 with the help from a grant from the U.S. State Department but maintains no lasting connection with the United States government. Daily life At Al-Wāḥa, Arabic language and culture are taught through Arabic games, arts and crafts, dances, sports, songs, and culturally authentic foods. Each day is focused around a theme, which include countries, holidays, literature, and art. Additionally, all daily activities are named in the Arabic language and all signs are given in the Arabic script. Al-Waha provides instruction to children of all ages through a variety of sessions. Concordia Language Villages
Concordia Language Villages (CLV), previously the International Language Villages, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Moorhead, Minnesota which operates a language immersion, language and cultural immersion program, sponsored by the Concordia College, Moorhead, Concordia College. Languages (14 as of 2025) are taught in summer camps, called "villages". Academic term, School-year weekend programs are also offered, mostly for Spanish, French, and German. Annually, the program is attended by over 13,000 young people, aged 7–18, from every state of the US, as well as Canada and 31 other countries. It was founded in 1961. Waldsee (camp)
Waldsee ("Lake of the Woods") is the German immersion program offered by Concordia Language Villages. Located near Bemidji, Minnesota, Waldsee is also the site of North America's first certified passive house, which uses 85% less energy than a house built to the Minnesota Energy Code. Waldsee is America's oldest and largest immersion program for German language and culture. Over 1,550 young people participate yearly, coming together from all 50 of the United States and many foreign countries. In 2009 Waldsee was recognized as a U.S. National Center of Excellence for its cultural immersion program by the American Association of Teachers of German. Language Immersion
Language immersion, or simply immersion, is a technique used in Bilingual education, bilingual language education in which two languages are used for instruction in a variety of topics, including maths, science, or social studies. The languages used for instruction are referred to as the L1 and the L2 for each student, with L1 being the student's first language, native language and L2 being the second language to be acquired through immersion programs and techniques. There are different types of language immersion that depend on the age of the students, the classtime spent in L2, the subjects that are taught, and the level of participation by the speakers of L1. Camp Fire (organization)
Camp Fire, formerly Camp Fire USA and originally Camp Fire Girls of America, is a co-ed youth development organization. Camp Fire was the first nonsectarian, multicultural organization for girls in America. It is now gender-inclusive, and its programs emphasize camping and other outdoor activities. Its informal roots extend back to 1910, with efforts by Mrs. Charles Farnsworth in Thetford, Vermont and Luther Gulick (physician), Luther Gulick, M.D., and his wife, Charlotte Vedder Gulick, on Sebago Lake, near South Casco, Maine. National Security Language Initiative
The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) is a US Department of State ECA program launched in 2006 by President George W. Bush to develop the foreign language skills of American high school students in eight critical-need languages. Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Arabic, Hindi, Bahasa Indonesian, Tajiki, and Turkish are all taught in summer and academic year programs abroad. NSLI-Y is the most prestigious foreign language program available to American high schoolers and many alumni go on to study at Ivy League institutions as well as hold high positions in government and a variety of industries worldwide. Skogfjorden is a Norwegian language village and campsite affiliated with the Concordia Language Villages. It is located at the Concordia site at Turtle River Lake near Bemidji, Minnesota, United States. Vergas is a city in northern Otter Tail County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 348 at the 2020 census. Vergas claims it is home of the ''World's Largest Loon'', actually a sculpture of a loon, the Minnesota state bird. Otter Tail County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2020 census, the population was 60,081, and was estimated to be 60,884 in 2024.
