Agriculture in Qatar Till quite recently, it was thought that Qatar's environment was not at all favourable for plantation and organic farming due to its harsh temperature during the summer months, desalinated chlorine water, poor annual rainfall and arid soil that all add up to quite the challenge of turning a desert area into a green oasis is inherently limited in scope due to the harsh climate and lack of arable land. In spite of this, small-scale farming, nomadic herding, pearling, and fishing were the predominant means of subsistence in the region until the commencement of oil drilling in 1939. Although the relative importance of these activities has declined as a means of livelihood (with commercial pearling disappearing completely), the government has attempted to encourage agriculture and fishing to provide a degree of self-sufficiency in food. Al Luqta
Al Luqta ( ar, اللقطة) is a district of Al Rayyan City in Qatar, located in the municipality of Al Rayyan. Etymology The district's name originates from the Arabic word "luqeet", which is the term designated for an abandoned infant whose parents have not been identified. At the time of its naming, the district was situated in an isolated and largely unknown area, thus, its name is figurative for its geographic location. Al Khor (city)
Al Khor ( ar, الخور) is a coastal city in northern Qatar, located 50 kilometres north of the capital, Doha. Considered one of Qatar's largest cities, it is the capital city of the municipality of Al Khor. The name of the city means creek in Arabic; it was given this name because the original settlement was built on a creek. Al Khor is home to many employees of the oil industry due to its proximity to Qatar's northern oil and natural gas fields and to Ras Laffan Industrial City. Al Thakhira
Al Thakhira ( ar, الذخيره, Adh Dhakhīrah, Ammunition) is a town on the coast of the Al Khor municipality in Qatar, about northeast of the city of Al Khor City and from the capital Doha. It is closely affiliated with Al Khor City, with both having been founded by the Al Muhannadi tribe. Like other coastal settlements in the area, its inhabitants historically relied solely on pearling and fishing for sustenance. Etymology Al Thakhira translates to 'ammunition' in English. There are two prevalent theories regarding the origin of this name. The first theory states that its inhabitants used to keep large reserves of food, money and weapons. Another theory alleges that the town was named by a group of sailors who had lost their bearings. Fuwayrit
Fuwayrit ( ar, فويرط; also spelled as Fuwairat) is a coastal village in Qatar, located in the municipality of Ash Shamal approximately 90 km north of the capital Doha. It is an important site for Qatar's oil industry. Archaeological evidence suggests that it may have been settled as early as the 16th century. Previously, it was one of the most important towns in the northern sector of Qatar, having served as the seat of power for the Al Thani who had migrated to it during the 18th century, prior to relocating to Al Bidda (presently Doha) in 1847. Abu Dhalouf
Abu Dhalouf ( ar, أبو ظلوف, Abū Ḑalūf) is a town on the north coast of Qatar, located in the municipality of Al Shamal. It was demarcated in 1988 and is bounded by Madinat ash Shamal to the immediate east, with Ar Ru'ays located to the immediate east of Madinat ash Shamal. Etymology In Arabic, 'abu' means 'father' and in this context is used to describe an area with a distinct feature. 'Dhalouf' is derived from the Arabic term 'dhalfa', which is the name given to the curved ends of saddles used for camel riding. It was so-named because of a prominent hill that resembled the end of a saddle. Alternative transliterations of the name are Abu Dhaluf, Abū Ḑalūf, Abu Dhuluf, and Abū Z̧ulūf. Al Khuwayr
Al Khuwayr ( ar, الخوير) is an abandoned village in northwest Qatar, located in the municipalities of Qatar, municipality of Ash Shamal. It is a popular domestic tourist attraction due to its history and ruined structures. History Prior to the 19th century Al Khuwayr was previously known as ''Khor Hassan'', literally meaning 'beautiful inlet'. In the late 18th century, noted pirate and tribal leader Rahmah ibn Jabir al-Jalahimah settled Al Khuwayr. It served as his base of operations against the House of Khalifa, Al Khalifa in Bahrain. Rahmah's base in Al Khuwayr was surrounded by a protected bay which rendered the area a difficult target for his enemies to attack. He resided in a fort with mud walls and there were only a few huts in the vicinity. 19th century Abu Al-Qassim Munshi, a British resident in Qatar, wrote a memo regarding the districts of Qatar in 1872. Al Wakrah
Al Wakrah ( ar, الوكرة, al-Wakra) is the capital city of the Al Wakrah Municipality in Qatar.
