A1 Highway (Sri Lanka)
The A1 road (commonly known as the ''Colombo - Kandy Road'' or just the ''Kandy Road'') is an List of A-Grade highways in Sri Lanka, A-Grade trunk road in Sri Lanka. It connects the capital city of Colombo with Kandy. History Commonly known as the Kandy Road, the A1 was the first modern highway in the island. Construction began in 1820 under the orders of the British Governor of Ceylon, Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton, 3rd Baronet. Construction was carried out by William Francis Dawson, Captain William Francis Dawson—who died during the project—along with Thomas Skinner (Ceylon), Major Thomas Skinner. In the memory of Captain Dawson, the Dawson Tower was erected at Kadugannawa in the Kadugannawa Pass. Route The A1 highway begins at Fort (Colombo), Colombo Fort. Road Development Authority
The Road Development Authority (commonly abbreviated as RDA); (; ) is the premier highway authority in Sri Lanka and is responsible for the maintenance and development of the National Highway Network, comprising the trunk (List of A-Grade highways in Sri Lanka, A class) and main roads and the planning, design and construction of new highways, bridges and expressways to augment the existing network in the country. The RDA plans the future road network while conducting feasibility studies before major projects and post-evaluations after completion to ensure adequate economic returns. Fort (Colombo)
Fort (Colombo) (Sinhala: ; Tamil: ) is the central business district of Colombo in Sri Lanka. It is the financial district of Colombo and the location of the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) and the World Trade Centre of Colombo from which the CSE operates. It is also the location of the Bank of Ceylon headquarters. Along the foreshore of the Fort area is the Galle Face Green Promenade, built in 1859 under the governance of Sir Henry George Ward, the Governor of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) during British colonial era. Nittambuwa
Nittambuwa is a semi urban town, situated in Gampaha District, Sri Lanka. The town is situated on the Colombo-Kandy highway. Kadawatha
Kadawatha (or Kadawata) ( ) is a large suburb of Gampaha, in the Western Province, Sri Lanka. It is situated on the A1 highway, approximately away from the centre of Colombo. Industrial machines, factories, diesel motor houses, strategic investments and leisure destinations are some of the industries established there. Kadawatha is a collection of many ruralities, including Biyagama, Mahara, Ganemulla, Kirillawala, Rammuthugala, Dalupitiya, Karagahamuna (upper and lower), Biyanwila (upper and lower) and Kirimatiyagaraya.
