3 Gold Coins
''3 Gold Coins'' is a lost 1920 American silent Western film directed by Clifford Smith and starring Tom Mix. It was produced and distributed by Fox Film Corporation. It is believed to be a lost film. Plot Things are not going well for Bob Fleming. Then, while showing off for Betty Reed and her father (Frank Whitson), he shoots through three gold coins, which Bob keeps as lucky charms. J. M. Ballinger and Rufus Berry arrive in the township of Four Corners and proceed to plant oil on Fleming's property, with plans to sell stock to the townsfolk. Bob is implicated in the scheme and arrested for fraud. In the end, it turns out there really is oil on Fleming's land. Clifford Smith (director)
Clifford Smith (1894–1937) was an American film director who also occasionally film actor, acted and film producer, produced. He directed over eighty films between 1915 and 1937 as well as several serial film, serials, doing much of his work for Universal Pictures. Primarily a director of western film, westerns he worked with leading genre stars such as William S. Hart. 1937 Fox Vault Fire
A major fire occurred in a 20th Century-Fox film-storage facility in Little Ferry, New Jersey, United States on July 9, 1937. Flammable nitrate film had previously contributed to several fires in film-industry laboratories, studios and vaults, although the precise causes were often unknown. In Little Ferry, gases produced by decaying film, combined with high temperatures and inadequate ventilation, resulted in spontaneous combustion. One death and two injuries resulted from the fire, which also destroyed all of the archived film in the vaults, resulting in the loss of most of the silent films produced by the Fox Film Corporation before 1932. Also destroyed were negatives from several other studios. The fire brought attention to the potential for decaying nitrate film to spontaneously ignite and changed the focus of film-preservation efforts to include a greater focus on fire safety.
