2022 Newport City Council Election
Elections to Newport City Council were held on 5 May 2022 along with elections to the other 21 local authorities in Wales, community council elections in Wales and 2022 United Kingdom local elections. The previous full council election took place in May 2017, though there had also been a number of by-elections in the city in the intervening period. Background The Labour Party had controlled Newport since 2012 and the Liberal Democrats, Conservatives and independents were hoping to make some inroads at this election. Following an electoral boundary review, the overall number of electoral wards increased from 20 to 21, with the total number of councillors increasing by one, from 50 to 51. The former Rogerstone ward was split into three while the Tredegar Park and Marshfield ward were merged. The Langstone, Llanwern and Lliswerry wards were substantially reconfigured. Allt-yr-yn
Allt-yr-yn ( cy, Allt-yr-ynn) is a suburb of the city of Newport, south-east Wales. Name Pronounced by English-speaking locals as "Olt-er-reen", the spelling should include two Ns at the end, as "Allt-yr-ynn". The name means "The slope (''allt'') of the ash trees (''ynn'' which is the plural of ''onnen'' – ash tree)" in Welsh. Description Allt-yr-yn forms an electoral ward (district) and coterminous community (parish) of the city. It is mainly residential and contains many large houses built in the early part of the 20th century. Some of the district is built upon the Ridgeway, Newport, with some of the ward offering views of surrounding areas such as Twmbarlwm. The area is governed by the Newport City Council. Tredegar Park And Marshfield
Tredegar Park and Marshfield is an electoral ward for Newport City Council in south Wales. It was created in 2022 by combining the former wards of Tredegar Park and Marshfield. It is represented by three city councillors. Description The Tredegar Park and Marshfield ward covers the communities (civil parishes) of Tredegar Park and Marshfield, additionally the communities of Coedkernew, Michaelstone-y-Fedw and Wentlooge, the latter comprising the former ward of Marshfield. The ward was formed by the merger of the former Marshfield and Tredegar Park wards, following recommendations of an electoral boundary review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales. The review was designed to improve electoral parity, towards an average electorate per councillor of 2,146. Shaftesbury, Newport
Shaftesbury is a community (civil parish) and coterminous electoral district (ward) of the city of Newport, South Wales. The community is bounded by the River Usk to the east and southeast, the Great Western Main Line to the south, the A4042 road to the southwest as far as the Harlequin intersection, at which point the border diverts up Barrack Hill behind Harlequin Drive, Power Street and Lambert Close to meet the Monmouthshire Canal which then forms the western boundary as far as Bettws Lane Bridge. The northern boundary is formed by the western and northern edges of Graig Wood, Yewberry Lane and south of Grove Park Drive. Nash ( cy, Trefonnen) is a village and community to the south of the city of Newport, South Wales, in the Lliswerry ward. Origin of the name The name is thought to originate from a contraction of "An Ash" (tree), meaning literally `place of the ash tree(s)'. This is supported by its appearance in deeds as "De Fraxino" ('' fraxinus'' was the Latin name for the ash tree). The Welsh name is ''Trefonnen'', given in older sources as ''Tre'r onnen'', also meaning Town (''tref'') of the Ash (''onnen''). Llanwern is the name of an electoral ward for Newport City Council in south Wales. It covers several rural communities to the east of the city. It is represented by one city councillor. Description The Llanwern ward covers the communities (civil parishes) of Llanwern, Nash, Goldcliff and Redwick. It has an electorate of 1,861. Prior to the 2022 local elections (prior to an electoral boundary review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales) Llanwern also included the community of Bishton, though Nash was part of the neighbouring Lliswerry ward. Graig is an electoral ward and coterminous community (parish) of the city of Newport, South Wales. The ward is bounded by the Ebbw River and M4 motorway to the east, the city boundary to the north and west. The southern boundary is formed by a line from the M4/ A467 intersection in a roughly westerly direction as far as the city boundary. The area is governed by the Newport City Council. Gaer, Newport
Gaer ( cy, Y Gaer) is a community and electoral district ("ward") of the city of Newport, South Wales. The ward includes both the Gaer and Maesglas estates. To the south west of the ward is a listed monument known as the Gaer Hillfort (alternative: the Gollars) a large ancient hill fort and defensive position overlooking the Ebbw River with views south across the River Severn to England and north towards Twmbarlwm and Mynydd Machen. Caerleon
Caerleon (; cy, Caerllion) is a town and community in Newport, Wales. Situated on the River Usk, it lies northeast of Newport city centre, and southeast of Cwmbran. Caerleon is of archaeological importance, being the site of a notable Roman legionary fortress, Isca Augusta, and an Iron Age hillfort. Close to the remains of Isca Augusta are the National Roman Legion Museum and the Roman Baths Museum. Bishton
Bishton or Bishopston ( cy, Llangadwaladr Trefesgob or simply ''Trefesgob'') is a small rural community (Wales), community in the east of the city of Newport, Wales, Newport, South Wales. It lies in the Llanwern electoral district (ward) and contains the eastern end of Llanwern steelworks, the Underwood, Newport, Underwood estate as well as Bishton itself. Bettws ( cy, Betws) is a large modern housing estate, electoral ward and coterminous community (parish) of the city of Newport, South Wales. Etymology The name of the village comes from the Middle English word ''bedhus'', meaning "prayer house", which became ''betws'' in Welsh. Infrastructure The housing estate was built in the 1960s, and the large majority of houses are identical in plan and design. The roads in the estate are all named after rivers. 51.8% of housing is privately owned, and 42.6% is rented from either the Newport City Council or local housing associations, such as Charter Housing.
