2018 Inter-Continental Hotel Kabul Attack
On 20 January 2018, a group of four or five gunmen attacked the Hotel Inter-Continental Kabul, Inter-Continental Hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan, sparking a 12-hour battle. The attack left 40 people dead including fourteen foreigners, while 14 were injured. Background Kabul was held by the NATO-supported Afghan government, though both the Taliban and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province, Islamic State were able to launch destructive attacks on the capital in the preceding months, including a December 2017 Kabul suicide bombing, suicide bombing less than a month prior to the Inter-Continental raid. Haqqani Network
The Haqqani network is an Afghan Islamist group, built around the family of the same name, that has used asymmetric warfare in Afghanistan to fight against Soviet forces in the 1980s, and US-led NATO forces and the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan government in the 21st century. It is considered to be a "semi-autonomous" offshoot of the Taliban. It has been most active in eastern Afghanistan and across the border in north-west Pakistan. The Haqqani network was founded in 1970 by Jalaluddin Haqqani, a fundamentalist of the Zadran tribe, who fought for Yunus Khalis's mujahideen faction against the Soviets in the 1980s. Jalaluddin Haqqani died in 2018 and his son Sirajuddin Haqqani now leads the group. The Haqqani network was one of the Reagan administration's most CIA-funded anti-Soviet groups in the 1980s. Baghran District
Baghrān ( ps, بغران) is the northernmost district in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Its population, which is 99% Pashtun and 1% Hazara, was estimated at 82,018 in 2002. The district centre is the village of Baghran; there are around 450 villages in the district. Afghan National Army Commando Corps
The Afghan National Army Commando Corps (formerly ANA Commando Brigade; ANA Commando Battalion) was a commando force of the Afghan National Army (ANA). During the Taliban insurgency, the commandos comprised 7% of the Afghan National Security Forces but conducted 70% to 80% of the fighting. The unit structure was based on the 75th Ranger Regiment. After the Fall of Kabul and the collapse of the ANA and Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, the Commandos have been virtually dissolved. Selection and training The first Commando battalion was formed from existing infantry battalions. Nahri Saraj District
Grishk District ( ps, ګرشک ولسوالۍ) (population 114,200), also called Nahri Saraj District (), is a district in Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan. Its principal municipality is Grishk (population 48,546). Grishk Dam is located in the district. History On May 2020 Afghanistan attacks, 3 May 2020, seven Afghan security forces were killed and at least 12 others wounded in a suicide truck bomb attack on a military and intelligence base in Grishk District. The Red Unit ( ps, سره کیتا, Sara kheta; ur, ), also known as the Blood Unit, Red Group, Danger Group, or Taliban Special Forces Unit, is an elite military unit of the Islamic Emirate Army of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, described in some accounts as special operations forces or shock troops. History The Red Unit saw its first operational deployment in Sangin in early 2016. In the summer of that year a Taliban spokesperson reported to media that the Red Unit was producing consistently "good" results in actions against the Afghan National Army and discussions were underway about utilizing it for increased operational deployments.
