2016 Saint Lucian General Election
General elections were held in Saint Lucia on 6 June 2016. The result was a victory for the United Workers Party, which won eleven of the seventeen seats. On 7 June 2016 United Workers Party leader Allen Chastanet was sworn in as Prime Minister. The House of Assembly is the lower house of the Parliament of Saint Lucia, elected by popular vote. The upper house is the Senate. It has 17 or 18 members: 17 members elected for a five-year term in single-seat constituencies, and a speaker elected by the 17 members, who may be one of their number or a person chosen from outside the House. Laborie
Laborie is a village on the south coast of Saint Lucia. It was originally called l'Islet a Caret after the Loggerhead sea turtles that were found in the area. The name Laborie is named after Baron de Laborie who was the French governor of Saint Lucia from 1784–1789. At that time the village had a population of 712. Laborie is the seat of the Laborie District. History The French introduced large estates to the island and after the British took control of the island in 1814, many French landowners remained on their estates. In 1838 the first school was opened. Known as the "Mico School" because it was opened and operated by the Lady Mico Trust, it had 80 pupils and lasted until 1891. Peter Lenard "Spider" Montoute (born 30 June 1962) is a Saint Lucian politician and former Minister and parliamentary representative for Gros Islet for the United Workers Party (UWP). Montoute lost his seat in the 2021 Saint Lucian general election to Kenson Casimir; this was a landslide victory for the Saint Lucia Labour Party. Gros Islet (English: ''Large Island'') is a community near the northern tip of the island country of Saint Lucia, in the Gros Islet Quarter. Originally a quiet fishing village, it has become one of the more popular tourist destinations in the country. Edmund Estephane (born 16 November 1968) is a Saint Lucian politician who represented the constituency of Dennery South for the United Workers Party. He is also a former sprinter who competed at World Championships level. Estephane won his seat at the general election held on 11 December 2006. Dennery District is one of 10 districts (formerly Quarters) of the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia. The seat of Dennery District is the Dennery Village. Choiseul Quarter
Choiseul District is one of the 10 districts (formerly called quarter) of the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia. Located on the southwestern side of the island, the district is home to 6,130 people, according to the 2019 census. The seat of Choiseul District is the town of Choiseul. History The Choiseul District/Quarter was originally known as ''Anse Citron'', and an independent parish was established in 1765. In 1769 a census was done and recorded 75 whites, 25 free coloured, 512 negroes and 69 estates in Choiseul. However, most activity was originally in the River Dorée area, south-east of Choiseul.
