2012 Glasgow City Council Election
Elections to Glasgow City Council were held on 3 May 2012, the same day as the other Scottish local government elections. The election was the second using 21 new wards created as a result of the Local Governance (Scotland) Act 2004, each ward elected three or four councillors using the single transferable vote system form of proportional representation. The election in Glasgow attracted the most attention out of the local elections in Scotland as there were many predictions that the Scottish Labour would lose control of the council due to losses of seats to the Scottish National Party. The Labour administration had suffered from a number of defections of council members to the newly formed Glasgow First party and controversy surrounding Councillor's salaries and contracts. In the end, Labour remained in control, losing just one seat, while the SNP gained five. Glasgow City Council
Glasgow City Council is the local government authority for the City of Glasgow, Scotland. It was created in 1996 under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, largely with the boundaries of the post-1975 City of Glasgow district of the Strathclyde region. History The early city, a sub-regional capital of the old Lanarkshire county, was run by the old "Glasgow Town Council" based at the Tollbooth, Glasgow Cross. In 1895, the Town Council became "The Corporation of the City of Glasgow" ("Glasgow Corporation" or "City Corporation"), around the same time as its headquarters moved to the newly built Glasgow City Chambers in George Square. Scottish Liberal Democrats
The Scottish Liberal Democrats ( gd, Pàrtaidh Libearal Deamocratach na h-Alba, sco, Scots Leeberal Democrats) is a liberal, federalist political party in Scotland, a part of the United Kingdom Liberal Democrats. The party currently holds 4 of the 129 seats in the Scottish Parliament and 4 of the 59 Scottish seats in the House of Commons. Maryhill/Kelvin (ward)
Maryhill (Ward 15) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. It was created in 2007 as Maryhill/Kelvin, and in that election it returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system. The same boundaries were used in 2012. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed, the ward substantially decreased in territory and population, was renamed ''Maryhill'' and returned three members. Drumchapel/Anniesland (ward)
Drumchapel/Anniesland (Ward 14) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Since its creation in 2007 it has retained the same boundaries and returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system. Boundaries Located in the far north-west of Glasgow, the ward's western boundary is with West Dunbartonshire and its northern boundary with East Dunbartonshire. Garscadden/Scotstounhill (ward)
Garscadden/Scotstounhill (Ward 13) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Since its creation in 2007 it has retained the same boundaries and returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system. Boundaries Located in the north-west of Glasgow, the ward is immediately north of the River Clyde which is its southern boundary. It is directly adjacent to the town of Clydebank (West Dunbartonshire) to the west. Victoria Park (Ward 12) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Created as Partick West in 2007 it returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system; the boundaries were unchanged in 2012. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed, the ward decreased in size and population, was re-named ''Victoria Park'' and returned three members. Calton (ward)
Calton (Ward 9) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. On its creation in 2007 and in 2012 it returned three council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the seats increased to four due to the population having risen by 20% since it was first formed, although the boundaries did not change. Southside Central (ward)
Southside Central (Ward 8) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. On its creation in 2007 and in 2012 it returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed, the ward population decreased but it continued to return four members. Boundaries The ward is located immediately south of Glasgow city centre, with the River Clyde forming its northern boundary. Areas within the ward include the Gorbals, Hutchesontown, Govanhill, Queen's Park, Crosshill and Oatlands. The 2017 changes saw the Toryglen area being re-assigned to Langside ward. Langside (ward)
Langside (Ward 7) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. On its creation in 2007 and in 2012 it returned three council members, using the single transferable vote system. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the boundaries were changed, the ward increased in size and returned four members. Boundaries The ward is situated on the south side of Glasgow. As well as Langside itself, it also includes Battlefield, Mount Florida (including Hampden Park and the New Victoria Hospital), the northern parts of King's Park and Cathcart and the eastern part of Shawlands. The 2017 expansion took in Toryglen from the Southside Central ward and a few streets on the north side of the Cathcart Circle Line railway which had previously been in Newlands/Auldburn when the boundary was the White Cart Water. Craigton (ward)
Cardonald (Ward 4) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. It was created in 2007 as Craigton and returned four council members using the single transferable vote system. The same name and boundaries were used in the 2012 elections. For the 2017 Glasgow City Council election, the name was changed (Craigton is the name of a historic estate and was used as a ward name in past versions of the town authority, but in modern times the urban neighbourhood known by that name did not fall within its boundaries, whereas the whole of the larger Cardonald district did) although the territory and councillor numbers remained the same. Greater Pollok (ward)
Greater Pollok (Ward 3) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Since its creation in 2007 it has returned four council members, using the single transferable vote system. Boundaries Located in the south-west of Glasgow adjoining the Renfrewshire region to the west and East Renfrewshire to the south, the ward includes most of Pollok (excluding the northern Lyoncross/Templeland area north of the Levern Water which falls under Cardonald ward) as well as Priesthill, Househillwood, Darnley, Hurlet, Nitshill, South Nitshill, Jenny Lind, Parkhouse, Roughmussel, Southpark Village, Deaconsbank and the southern part of Crookston. A 2017 boundary change removed the Arden neighbourhood which was re-assigned to the Newlands/Auldburn ward. Newlands/Auldburn (ward)
Newlands/Auldburn (Ward 2) is one of the 23 wards of Glasgow City Council. Situated south of the city and the River Clyde, it is represented by 3 members as of 4 May 2017, one each from the Scottish National Party, Scottish Labour, and Scottish Conservatives. Boundaries and demographics The ward covers the areas of Pollokshaws, Newlands, Hillpark, Auldhouse, Merrylee, Cowglen, Kennishead, Eastwood, Mansewood, Carnwadric, Arden and the western part of Muirend, as well as Pollok Country Park. It is bordered to the east by , and railway stations, with and stations running through the centre. A 2017 boundary change resulted in the gain of Arden from the Greater Pollok ward, and a minor loss of a few streets in Cathcart to the Langside ward when the boundary was moved south from the White Cart Water to the Cathcart Circle Line railway.
