2011 Giro D'Italia, Stage 1 To Stage 11
The 2011 Giro d'Italia began on 7 May, and stage 11 occurred on 18 May. The 2011 edition commemorated the 150th anniversary of Italian unification. The majority of the race, and the entire first half, was situated entirely within Italy without visiting any other nations. The race commenced with a team time trial, an event where each member of a team starts together racing against the clock. The stage provided for the first two race leaders, members of the winning team. The race, and the entire cycling world, were turned upside down by the death of rider Wouter Weylandt in stage 3. Weylandt had crashed from near the back of the race while descending a hill, and sustained such grievous injury that he was established to have died instantly upon falling to the road. Young Rider Classification In The Giro D'Italia
The Young rider classification in the Giro d'Italia was added to the Giro d'Italia in 1976 for the younger riders in the race. The classification is calculated in the same way as the general classification, with the riders times being totaled together after each stage; however, the classification is restricted to those that are under 25 years of age. Between 1976 and 1994 the classification had different qualifications. The leader of the classification is awarded a white jersey (''maglia bianca''). The classification was discontinued after the 1994 Giro d'Italia. However, it was reintroduced in 2007, with the age limit increased to 25 years. Robbie McEwen
Robbie McEwen (born 24 June 1972) is an Australian former professional road cyclist. McEwen is a three-time winner of the Tour de France points classification and, at the peak of his career, was considered the world's fastest sprinter. He last rode for on the UCI World Tour. A former Australian BMX champion, McEwen switched to road cycling in 1990 at 18 years of age. He raced as a professional from 1996 until 2012. McEwen retired from the World Tour after riding the 2012 Tour of California and is now a cycling broadcast commentator on the Tour Down Under and the Tour de France. Craig Lewis (cyclist)
Craig Lewis (born January 10, 1985) is an American former professional road bicycle racer, who competed professionally between 2007 and 2013. In 2004, while riding for – then a small team on the US circuit that would later grow to be one of the world's biggest, currently known as – Lewis was gravely injured when he was struck by a car during an individual time trial at the Tour de Georgia. He lost consciousness, punctured both lungs, suffered severe internal bleeding, and fractured dozens of bones. After months of rehab and physical therapy, and multiple surgeries, Lewis eventually made a full recovery. After failing to earn a contract for the 2014 season, Lewis retired in February 2014. Kanstantsin Sivtsov (or Siutsou ( be, Канстанцін Віктаравіч Сіўцоў; Łacinka: Kanstancin Viktaravič Siŭcoŭ; born 9 August 1982) is a Belarusian former professional road bicycle racer, who rode professionally between 2001 and 2018 for the Itera, Lokomotiv, , , , , , and squads. He retired after provisionally being suspended from the sport following an adverse analytical finding for erythropoietin (EPO). Career Sivtsov was born in the Belarusian city of Gomel in 1982. Marco Pinotti (born 25 February 1976 in Osio Sotto, Lombardy) is an Italian former road racing cyclist, who competed as a professional between 1999 and 2013. The 2009 Giro d'Italia began on 9 May, with Stage 11 occurring on 20 May. The first stage, like it had been since 2007 Giro d'Italia, 2007, was a team time trial, a stage where each member of the team raced together against the clock. Like most cycling Grand Tour (cycling), Grand Tours do, the beginning of the 2009 Giro included a string of flat stages that were contested by cycling sprinter, sprinters. These stages were contested by Alessandro Petacchi and Mark Cavendish, among others, with Petacchi in victory becoming one of the only riders to defeat Cavendish in a sprint in the 2009 season.
