2009 Kuomintang Chairmanship Election
The 2009 Kuomintang chairmanship election () was held on 26 July 2009 in Taiwan with Ma Ying-jeou as the sole candidate. This was the fourth direct election of the chairman in the Kuomintang (KMT) history. All registered, due-paying KMT party members were eligible to vote. Aftermath In his victory speech, Ma promised to enhance cooperation between Kuomintang and the government, deal with party assets and continue efforts to communicate with the opposition Pan-Green Coalition parties. He wished for the KMT to become a party of integrity, democracy and effectiveness. He would be inaugurated as the chairman on the upcoming party congress scheduled on 12 September 2009. Ma Ying-jeou
Ma Ying-jeou ( zh, 馬英九, born 13 July 1950) is a Hong Kong-born Taiwanese politician who served as president of the Republic of China from 2008 to 2016. Previously, he served as justice minister from 1993 to 1996 and mayor of Taipei from 1998 to 2006. He served as chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT) from 2005 to 2007 and from 2009 to 2014. Ma first won the presidency by 58.45% of the popular vote in the presidential election of 2008, and was re-elected in 2012 with 51.6% of the vote. He was sworn into office as president on 20 May 2008, and sworn in as the Chairman of the Kuomintang on 17 October 2009; he resigned as chairman of Kuomintang on 3 December 2014. Ma's term as president saw warmer relations with Mainland China. Wu Po-hsiung
Wu Po-hsiung (; born 19 June 1939) is a Taiwanese politician who is a former chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT). He has been the Interior Minister (1984-1988), Mayor of Taipei (1988–1990), Secretary-General to the President (1991–1996), and Chairman of the KMT (2007-2009). Wu was nominated as Honorary Chairman of the Kuomintang when he was succeeded by Ma Ying-jeou as the Chairman of the Kuomintang. The pan-Green coalition, pan-Green force or pan-Green groups is a nationalist political coalition in Taiwan (Republic of China), consisting of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Taiwan Statebuilding Party (TSP), Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Green Party Taiwan, and Taiwan Constitution Association (TCA). The platform of the New Power Party is also very closely aligned with all the other Pan-Green parties. The 18th National Congress of the Kuomintang () was the eighteenth national congress of the Kuomintang political party, held on 17 October 2009 at Xinzhuang Baseball Stadium, Taipei, Taiwan. There are eleven types of elections in Taiwan which, since 2012, have been unified into general and local elections, each held every four years, typically in January and November respectively. There may also be by-elections. Electoral systems include first-past-the-post, proportional representation, single non-transferable voting, and a parallel mixture of the above.
