2020 Polaris Music Prize
The 2020 edition of the Canada, Canadian Polaris Music Prize was presented on October 19, 2020. The longlist was announced on June 15, 2020, with the shortlist following on July 15, 2020 and the winner announced on October 19, 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the traditional winner's gala did not take place this year, and instead a special cinematic tribute to the shortlist was streamed online by CBC Music and CBC Gem, following which the winner was announced. The award was won by Backxwash for the album ''God Has Nothing to Do With This Leave Him Out of It''. The livestreamed presentation received a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Live Production for Social Media at the 9th Canadian Screen Awards. Backxwash
Ashanti Mutinta, known professionally as Backxwash, is a Zambian-Canadians, Canadian rapper and record producer based in Montreal, Quebec. She is most noted for her 2020 album ''God Has Nothing to Do with This Leave Him Out of It'', which won the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. Etmet Musa, also known by her alias Ayo Leilani and her stage name Witch Prophet, is an Ethiopian/Eritrean musician based in Toronto, Ontario. As Witch Prophet, she has released 3 albums: ''The Golden Octave'' (2018), ''DNA Activation'' (2020), and Gateway Experience (2023). She co-founded and is the co-director of 88 Days of Fortune, a collective based in Toronto since 2009 that rebranded as Heart Lake Records in 2018. ''Before Love Came to Kill Us'' is the debut studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez. It was released on March 27, 2020, by FMLY and Island Records. The production on the album was handled by multiple producers including Rogét Chahayed, Mura Masa, Hennedub, The Monarch and Bizness Boi among others. The album also features guest appearances by Eminem and 6lack on the standard version and with Rico Nasty, JID, A Boogie wit da Hoodie and Melii on the deluxe versions. ''Miss Colombia'' is the third studio album by ColombianCanadian musician Lido Pimienta. It was released on April 17, 2020, through Anti Records. The album features collaborations with Li Saumet, vocalist of Bomba Estereo, as well as Rafael Cassiani Cassiani and Sexteto Tabala. The album was nominated for several awards, such as the Latin Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album, the Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album, the Polaris Music Prize and the Juno Award for Recording Package of the Year. ''Pantayo'' is the debut album by Canadian kulintang quintet Pantayo, released on May 8, 2020, on Toronto label Telephone Explosion. It was produced by alaska B of Yamantaka // Sonic Titan. The album was one of ten nominated for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize. Style ''Pantayo'' combines the kulintang music of the South Philippines with "western" genres such as synth-pop, hip-hop, R&B, trip hop, and punk. There is large diversity between the musical styles showcased on ''Pantayo''. "Heto Na" ( Tagalog for "here we go") was inspired by the Original Pilipino Music scene of the 1970s. "V V V (They Lie)" has a composition that the band compared to bubble tea. Pantayo is a Canadian quintet consisting of queer members of the Filipino diaspora formed in 2012. They combine elements of kulintang with elements of electronic, synth-pop, punk, and R&B music. Their name is Tagalog for "for us". ''Bubba'' (stylized in all caps) is the second studio album by the Canadian electronic music producer Kaytranada, released by RCA Records on December 13, 2019.
