2020 Indonesian Local Elections
Local elections (, ) were held in Indonesia on 9 December 2020. Voters elected nine governors, 224 regents, and 37 mayors across the country. All the elections were held on the same day, and over 100 million people were expected to be eligible to vote. Background Simultaneous local elections (''Pilkada Serentak'') were first held in Indonesia in 2015. The leadup to the 2020 elections saw several regulations being issued by the General Elections Commission (KPU) barring certain candidates from running, from adulterers to politicians who had been charged with corruption. The decision that the simultaneous local elections throughout Indonesia would be held amid the COVID-19 pandemic stirred some controversy in the Indonesian public. Provinces Of Indonesia
Provinces are the first-level administrative divisions of Indonesia. They were formerly called first-level provincial regions (), before the Post-Suharto era in Indonesia, Reform era. Democratic Party (Indonesia)
The Democratic Party (, , sometimes abbreviated to PD) is a centre to centre-right nationalist political party in Indonesia. Currently, it holds 44 seats in the House of Representatives (DPR). It is led by Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), the son of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), who served as the President of Indonesia from 2004 to 2014. Founded in September 2001 as the political vehicle of SBY, the party gained its initial parliamentary representation following the 2004 legislative election, and SBY was elected as president. It then became one of the major parties in SBY's governing coalition. Rohidin Mersyah
Rohidin Mersyah (born 9 January 1970) is an Indonesian politician who has served as governor of Bengkulu from December 2018 to November 2024. Early life Mersyah was born in the village of Gelumbang, in Manna, South Bengkulu, on 9 January 1970 as the fifth child of nine. He completed his basic education in South Bengkulu, before studying veterinary medicine at Gadjah Mada University. Career In 2010, Mersyah ran as a vice-regent candidate for the South Bengkulu Regency. Initially, him and the regent candidate Reskan Effendi lost the election with just 48.06% of votes, but following a lawsuit to the Constitutional Court their opponent was disqualified as he had previously been jailed for murder and was hence ineligible as a candidate. Bengkulu (), historically known as Bencoolen, is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the southwest coast of Sumatra. Al Haris (born 23 November 1973) is an Indonesian politician and bureaucrat who has served as the governor of Jambi since 2021. Before becoming governor, he was elected twice as regent of Merangin Regency, serving between 2013 and 2021. He was a civil servant in Jambi for over 20 years before entering politics. 2020 Jambi Gubernatorial Election
The 2020 Jambi gubernatorial election was held on 9 December 2020 to elect the governor and vice-governor of Jambi. They were held as a part of the 2020 local elections across Indonesia. The incumbent, , had taken office following the removal of Governor over corruption and was running for re-election. The regent of Merangin Regency, Al Haris, of the National Mandate Party won the most votes. However, the regent of Sarolangun Regency, , challenged the results to the Constitutional Court, resulting in a re-vote in 88 polling stations. Mahyeldi Ansharullah (born 25 December 1966) is an Indonesian politician from the Prosperous Justice Party who is the current governor of West Sumatra. He was made mayor of Padang in 2014, following a five-year tenure as deputy and victory in the elections of 2013 and 2018.
