Local elections were held in The Gambia on 12 April 2018. The elections saw a victory for the United Democratic Party. Voter turnout was low, at 29 percent of eligible voters participating. Gambian citizens also criticized the slow release of election results. 2023 Gambian Local Elections
Local elections were held in the Gambia on 20 May 2023.. The elections took place following President Adama Barrow's re-election under the banner of the new National People's Party, and their subsequent victory in the 2022 parliamentary elections. Results Total The ruling National People's Party lost to the opposition United Democratic Party in urban areas while still winning in most rural areas. Urban settlements The United Democratic Party won all three urban local government areas, in Banjul, Brikama, and Kanifing. The National People's Party lost all but one councilor seat outside Brikama. Banjul Brikama Kanifing Rural settlements The National People's Party won all but one rural elections. A.N.M Ousainou Darboe (born 8 August 1948) is a Gambian politician and leader of the main opposition United Democratic Party (The Gambia), United Democratic Party (UDP). He previously served as Vice-President of the Gambia and Minister of Women's Affairs (The Gambia), Minister of Women's Affairs from June 2018 to March 2019, under President of the Gambia, President Adama Barrow. He also served as President Barrow's Minister of Foreign Affairs (The Gambia), Minister of Foreign Affairs from February 2017 to June 2018. Darboe is a human rights lawyer, and worked for the Attorney General's Chambers before entering private practice. Mama Kandeh
Mama Kandeh (born 12 July 1965) is a member of the Pan-African Parliament from the Gambia. He is the founding leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) political party, which he formed in the summer of 2016. He ran as a candidate in the Gambian presidential election of 2016 and received 17.1% of the votes. Background He once attended Crab Island School in Banjul, and (GTTI) in Jeshwang, Serrekunda, Kanifing. He was formerly a member of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction, which was the ruling party at the time, but was expelled and formed the GDC. Fabakary Tombong Jatta (born 16 November 1952) is a Gambian politician who has served as Speaker of the National Assembly since 2022 and the leader of the Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) since 2017. Early life and career Jatta was born on 16 November 1952 in Albreda, Gambia. He was educated at Armitage High School and Yundum College (1970–1973). He later worked as a teacher in Bansang from 1973 to 1977 and at Crab Island Junior Secondary School, Banjul from 1977 to 1979, before joining Nigeria Airways, where he became the district accountant. Hamat Ngai Kumba Bah is a Gambian politician who is the current Minister of Tourism and Culture in President Adama Barrow's cabinet. He is also the leader of the National Reconciliation Party (NRP) and has been a presidential candidate in 1996, 2001 and 2011. He was the National Assembly Member for Upper Saloum from 1997 to 2005.
