2013 Nunavut General Election
The 2013 Nunavut general election was held October 28, 2013, to elect 22 members to the 4th Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. In November 2012 the assembly passed the Nunavut Elections Act 2012, stating that the Dropping the writ, writs for election drop September 23, 2013, and an election be held October 28, 2013, the proclamation was registered November 9, 2012. At the 2013 forum, held on November 15, 2013, Peter Taptuna was selected as the new Premier of Nunavut. Election summary Redistribution The number of electoral districts were increased to 22 from 19. Legislative Assembly Of Nunavut
The Legislative Assembly of Nunavut is the legislative assembly for the Canadian territory of Nunavut. The seat of the Assembly is the Legislative Building of Nunavut in Iqaluit. Prior to the creation of Nunavut as a Canadian territory on 1 April 1999, the 1999 Nunavut general election was held on 15 February to determine the 1st Nunavut Legislature. The Legislative Assembly was opened by Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, on 7 October 2002, during her Golden Jubilee tour of Canada. In her speech the Queen stated: "I am proud to be the first member of the Canadian Royal Family to be greeted in Canada's newest territory." Samuel Nuqingaq
Samuel Nuqingaq is a Canadian Inuk politician from Qikiqtarjuaq, Nunavut. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the 2013 election. He was expelled from the legislature in 2014. Political career Election Nuqinqaq ran for election in the electoral district of Uqqummiut which was one of two ridings to report a tie on election night in the 2013 election. In the original count of the ballots he was tied with Niore Iqalukjuak at 187 votes each. Louis Tapardjuk (born January 30, 1953) is a Canadian former Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the electoral district of Amittuq from 2004 to 2013, having won the seat in the 2004 Nunavut election. He was born in an igloo northwest of Igloolik, Nunavut. Tapardjuk served on the Executive Council of Nunavut the Minister of Finance and Minister of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth (CLEY). Steve Mapsalak
Steve Mapsalak (March 17, 1957 – April 16, 2025) was a Canadian politician, who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut. Life and career Mapsalak first won the Akulliq seat in the 2004 Nunavut election. According to preliminary results, he was narrowly defeated by John Ningark in the 2008 election. A judicial recount was conducted, but resulted in Ningark and Mapsalak each receiving exactly 157 votes, thus forcing a new vote. In the revote on March 2, Ningark defeated Mapsalak by a margin of 193 to 179. In the 2013 election, Mapsalak was re-elected to the legislature, defeating Johnny Ningeongan in the redistributed district of Aivilik. Coral Harbour (Inuktitut: Salliq / Salliit, Syllabics: ᓴᓪᓕᖅ / ᓴᓪᓖᑦ, formerly Southampton Island) is a small Inuit community that is located on Southampton Island, Kivalliq Region, in the Canadian territory of Nunavut. Naujaat (), Anglicised and officially known until 2 July 2015 as Repulse Bay, is an Inuit hamlet situated on the Arctic Circle. It is located on the shores of Hudson Bay, at the south end of the Melville Peninsula, in the Kivalliq Region of Nunavut, Canada. Location and wildlife Naujaat is at the north end of Roes Welcome Sound which separates Southampton Island from the mainland. On the east side of Naujaat Frozen Strait leads east to Foxe Channel.
