2008 Russian Professional Rugby League Season
The 2008 Russian Professional Rugby League Season was the fourth season of the new Russian Professional Rugby League. The season saw a huge expansion of the competition with the entrance of 14 teams into the preliminary group stage of the championship. VVA Monino were the eventual champions. Format This season saw the introduction of an initial group stage whereby the championship was divided into two Divisions, the Eastern Division consisting of six teams, and the Western Division consisting of eight, with the West Division further subdivided into two groups of four. At the end of the group stage the top six sides formed a super-group that then featured a home and away stage between these six sides. The play-offs again featured a best of three semi final stage with the top side playing against the four side, whilst two versed three. The Russian Rugby Championship, officially known as the Liga Stavok - Russian Rugby Championship for sponsorship reasons (russian: Лига Ставок - Чемпионат России по регби), is Russia's top level professional men's rugby union competition. VVA-Podmoskovye Monino
The VVA-Podmoskovye is a Russian rugby union team playing in the Professional Rugby League. The team plays at Gagarin Air Force Academy stadium in Monino, a garrison town just outside Moscow. VVA-Podmoskovye have strong links to the air force and also supplied the bulk of Russia, with which they shared a head coach, Nikolai Nerush. The team had ambitious plans for the future - it lobbied hard for inclusion in the European Challenge Cup and was close to completing a 12,500-seat purpose-built rugby stadium. Yenisey-STM Rugby Club is a Russian rugby union club founded in 1975. It is one of the two powerful Krasnoyarsk clubs, the other being their cross town rivals Krasny Yar. Krasny Yar Krasnoyarsk is a Russian rugby union club founded in 1969 in the city of Krasnoyarsk. They compete in the Professional Rugby League, the premier league in the country. They have an operating budget of 2.5m Euros. Their main rival is fellow Krasnoyarsk based, Enisey-STM. Krasny-Yar play in white and green, and moved into their own purpose-built stadium.
